I recently picked up two .44 Hand Ejectors ("Wolf & Klar") only four years apart. One is #28179, which dates to 4/27, the other one (with "pawnshop engraving") is #34451 and dates to 3/30. The last patent date on barrel of the earlier one is Sept. 14, 09, while the last date on the newer one is Dec, 29, 14. In working on these I found two distinctly different sideplates, with the newer one having a spring-loaded gizmo which I assume is a hammer block. Can anyone clarify this? I don't see any reference to this in any of the four S&W books I have.

Looks like an early hammer block.....I'll go dig out the Kunhausen book and see if I can find a reference to it.
The sideplate hammer block safety was first implemented on the K frames in 1915 and updated with the 2nd style in 1926. On N frames:

Do you have a factory letter on #28179? Does it letter as a 3rd Model .44? Everything I have read states that the first 3rd Model .44 was #28358.

Both revolvers have shrouded barrels which would indicate 3rd models if the barrels have serial numbers matched to the guns.
Early 3rd models do exist with out later features like the square notch rear sight and flat top strap. Likely side plate too.

At least one member here on the Forum has a 2nd Model .44 that is wearing a shrouded barrel, that's why I was asking.

Yes, seen a few with 3rd model barrels too. Always mismatched barrel #, at least so far, so i always ask.
