Couple weeks ago I got a 27-2 and love it... now I think I need a 44 mag to go with it. What are the best models and why? And what is the best value as a shooter and/or collector? Looking for something that will be close to my 27-2 quality wise unless there is a far better value out there. Please keep in mind I am pretty green when it comes to relvolvers so any help/info is greatly appreciated.

The 29-2 would be pretty close. It's the last of the pinned and recessed guns. The early ones are S prefix guns, the later ones N prefix. (serial numbers)
Congrats on the 27-2 and welcome to the forum.

I would assume that the 29-3 is a later model... not doubting but what is the disadvantage of non pinned/recessed? Or are there other issues on the 29-3?
Thanks

You are right the 29-3 is a latter model. I don't think the 29-2 can do anything the 29-3 can't do, it is just the old school cool factor.

The 29-3 is the next change in the evolution of the 29. People seem to like the recessed chambers of the 29-2 and earlier and the pinned barrel was considered a more desireable feature by many. As far as performance they should all do about the same.
If you get into the newer ones, 29-3E, 29-4 and up they incorporate the endurance package which for most of us won't really make much of a difference.
Get yourself a copy of the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd edition. It's one of the best books on the S&W's.
The current 29 is the 29-10. Each '-' number indicates an change in the way the guns are made/built. My favorite is the 29-5.
