S&W 44 mag with 5 inch barrel

Wow! That's unique and quite nice! Indeed, the barrel is too short to be 6 inches, yet too long to be 4 inches, plus with the supporting documentation from S&W, it is one of one.

Posting a few pics as requested. There was indeed an 'N' on the grip frame. Let me know what you think, I sure appreciate all the input.

OK, you definitely have an original nickel plated Model 29-2, manufactured in 1966-67 (based on s/n S279626). Doc44 or one of our other .44 Magnum gurus should be able to narrow down its DOM and shipping date based on their extensive databases.

Yes, he told me a little about the gun. He was a policeman and bought it to wear on the job...in the late 60's he said you could use whatever gun you wanted to. (He also had a shotgun that was 'modified' - I have that now too) He soon discovered that he was going to have to qualify using the sidearm he carried daily (50 shots) and he quickly went back to his old gun! He said there was 'no way he wanted to shoot 50 rounds with that beast'

We had a deputy who carried a .44 Magnum. He borrowed my friend's Python for the semi-annual qualification and shot .38 wadcutters. The sheriff didn't seem to care.
