.44 Magnum and Hornady XTP's

I have some 200 grain Hornady XTP's that I picked up today for my .44 Magnum, but I am having trouble finding a load that would give me about 1,100 fps with Unique out of a 4-inch barrel. All the loading date I see is for 1,300 or more.

200gr. for 44 Rem Magnum.

Unique start 10.5grs for 905fps. max of 13.2 for 1148 fps.

Test barrel is 4"

David; Unless you're stuck with something like W-296 which pretty much requires a 90+% full case you shouldn't have trouble just reducing your powder charge by 10 to 15% and get about what you're looking for. 2400 or Unique will both give you this level without too much trouble.

funny thing is, Lyman's load of 13.2 is .3 grains above Hornady's max load of 12.9, that they claim gives 1400 fps.

Speer lists a "short Barrel" load for a 200 grain GDHP that was test fired from a 4'' M29. Staring load of 9.0 gave 990fps and the max load of 11.0 gave 1122.

You expect consistent load data?? I think it depends on what lawyer was on duty that day.

Heck I have problems finding OAL for 9mm 115gr fmj or 230fmj gr 45ACP

I load 9.2 grains of Unique with 200 grain Speer JHP, and 200 grain GDHP bullets. I get about 1250 fps with my Marlin 1894 SS and about 1050 fps with my S&W 329PD.

I have loaded 9.0 grains of Unique with these bullets and got a little less from the 329PD .. didn't shoot them from the 1894.

I just loaded some 9.4 grains of Unique with the 200 grain JHP bullets and will chrono them tomorrow, or Tuesday. I'd like to see about 1100 fps.

Are you trying to get that velocity? I have a Marlin 1894CB that I am getting more velocity from with heavier bullets. Lighter ones, in the 180gr range, I am getting almost 2000fps.

Is there a reason you are running them so slow?

Hello smith crazy, or is it just crazy ? I load the .44 magnum for the revolver. I use the 9.2 grains of Unique in the S&W 329PD in order not to make it not an unenjoyable revolver to shoot. The 1050 fps is about that point for me with the 200 grain bullets.

I load for my S&W 629 at 1500 fps. Here I use Alliant 2400 though (24.5 grains). I get more from the carbine in this case also.

I just have two different loads, based upon which revolver I take (I sometimes like to take the 1894 also). If I'm just going up into the Sierras fishing, or photo shooting I'll take the 329PD and lighter loads. If I am going to do a little hunting, I'll take the heavier load.
