Does anybody still manufacture .44 magnum mid-velocity 200 to 240 gr (around 1000 fps) ammunition ? - either new commercial or professionally re-loaded ammo.

Any advice is appreciated.

The lightest kicking factory .44M I have found is the Cor-Bon 165gr load. Listed as 1300fps. So, pretty much a reasonably hot .357.

I suppose their Glaser load would kick even less, but at $3/shot I won't know. I have some stashed away.

Most .44M loaded for SASS is within the range you describe.

The Georgia Arms 240 grain FMJ at 1000 fps is my favorite range ammo for my S&W 69. Strong enough to be interesting but not abusive. Reasonably priced at $27 for a 50 round bag plus shipping.

.44 Rem Mag 240gr Full Metal Jacket NEW - Georgia Arms

They also have a 240 grain LSWC @ 1000 fps but I have not tried it.

All the 44 ammo I have bought from them came in brand new Starline brass. I do not reload anymore but if you do the reloadable cases are a plus.

If you are looking for JHP ammo I have not seen any mid power 44 magnum recently. But companies like Underwood and Buffalo Bore load some pretty hot 44 special ammo that might be pretty close to what you want.

If you are carrying for self defense, Underwood's 200gr 44 SPL chrono'd at ~1050 from my 4" M29.

I haven't chrono'd them yet, but I have started carrying 210gr Winchester Silvertips in my 44 Magnums. Winchester claims 1250fps, and I think that's probly about right because they definitely pack more of a wallop than the Underwoods. The recoil is about like shooting 357 from a K frame - not comfortable, but manageable.

I think Winchester white box is mid level but that would still put U in the 1160 fps or so, maybe more actually it might even be around 1260 fps I really can't recall off the top of my head...if for defense I'd go w the specials in the plus p range.

And since it sounds like you don't, what do you do with your brass.:D
I was taking it home and storing it next to the rest of my reloading equipment I have not used in 10 or 15 years. After seeing how little it sells for I have either been leaving it on the bench at the gun club in case a reloader wants it or just throw it away.

Over the past 2-3 years I've ordered a bit more than 2500 rounds of 240gr SWC .44 magnum ammo from Georgia Arms. I've always found their ammo to be clean and reliable. Shoots very accurate from both my 4" S&W 629 and my Ruger SBH. This ammo has chrono'd between 1000-1025 fps in my 4" Smith, and 1050-1100 through my SBH. As posted by Dave Lively, their ammo is loaded in new Starline brass at $25.00/50 rds.

I think Powder River Cartridge loaded a similar .44 magnum 240 grain SWC at right about the same 1000 fps. Checked their website earlier this week and its no longer available. Fear they've shut down. They also loaded a 240 grain SWC .44 special load and a 255 gr. SWC load in .45 Colt, both @ 825 fps.

Here's a few:

Remington HTP 240gr JSP @1180fps

Armscor USA 240gr SWC @ 1100fps

Winchester USA 240gr Jacketed Soft Point @1180fps

Winchester white box, 240 gr JSP

Avg velocity was 1155 out of my M69 2.75" bbl.
Hot load, indeed. Flat primers & sooty cases.

Hi There!

Remington HTP comes in a shade below 1200 fps and a shade below 750 mv. Hope this helps.

I don't shoot .44, but if the Georgia Arms .44 is a reasonable facsimile of their .41 magnum LSWC practice load that I've used then that's what I would try.

It was put up in virgin Starline brass and didn't lead my barrel at all. The .41 stuff was very accurate.

Fiocchi is about even w WWB ammo around 1160 to 1180 fps...good ammo too.

I was going to say this. I was buying Fiocchi 240 SJSP ammo from SGA, PN 44A500 (also their 240g SJHP PN 44D500)

I got 1109 fps from my 4" 629 and 1251 from my 7.5" Super Redhawk.

I consider that to be a very middle of the road magnum load.

(The 44 Special Magtech 240g FMJ SGA sells comes in at 765 fps average.)

Compare those to some super hot 240g SWC reloads I made that were spitting out at an average of 1614 fps and they seem tame.

If you want to see some really good data laid out for factory loads, look here:

Reload!

Load up with AA#5 and send a 240 grain hardcast at about 1000 pfs or so. You'll love it.

AA doesn't publish for that midrange load, but I extrapolated from .45 Colt data (the case volume and bullet weights are quite similar, and I'm an experienced reloader). Good stuff.

Yes. As someone mentioned Georgia Arms offers a 240 gr. FMJ Magnum round with a muzzle velocity of 1000 fps. I've used it with excellent results.

And, LAX Ammunition offers a 240 gr. Magnum with a muzzle velocity of 1026 fps.

The LAX is New ammunition (They also sell reloads). It is really excellent; Clean, consistent and accurate. (It also makes a nice round hole in the target too :-) And, for "store bought" .44 Magnum ammo, very inexpensive. And, when you're on their email mailing list, they frequently offer free shipping specials.

I shoot it in my 2 1/2" barrel Ruger Alaskan (and larger revolvers) and it's a pleasure to shoot. It has all the drama of a full house .44 magnum round without the "Ouch! That really smarts" reaction. :) It's a non-issue to go through a whole box in one outting without any discomfort.
