44 Magnum "Types", 1956-1982

A little story...

Returned from Germany in 1997, to serve my last Air Force tour of duty in Colorado Springs. In '98, saw this 4-screw at a gunshow in the Springs. It wore a 4" barrel, and being a venerator of St. Elmer, I fell in love.
A Sig P228 with a lot of 13-round mags that had found their way home from Deutschland (this was the time of the Klinton AWB) made the trade. A friend's analysis, and later, a Jinks letter revealed to me that the 4" bbl was not original and poorly installed. A trip to Smith cured that; they reinstalled the barrel and the piece shot like a dream. Several years later, after joining this forum, I got a jones for a 6'5" bbl; found a correct one right here, in wax-paper wrap, for a reasonable price. Smith did their installation majick for peanuts. Tack driver; only shoot Skeltons (.44 Spl, 7.5 gr Unique, home-cast Lyman true-Keith 250 grains). Don't shoot her too often , but no guilt when I do. Might be one day a mighty elk will fall to her thunder; if not, she's a plain fun old girl my boys are going to fight over someday.

Bill: Slightly off topic, but mention of the 5 inch guns made me think of H. H. Harris. Do you have photos of the outside or inside of ol' Herbie's place?

Thanks,

Shawn

Shawn...I think a photo or two have been posted on the forum over the years, but I do not have any photos in my collection.
