.44 Spl handloads: accuracy issues

Can you get or do you have some magnum primers for testing?

CCI / Speer typically recommends magnum primers be used with ball powders and in cold weather . Ball powders are harder to ignite and magnum primers are often called for even in non-magnum pistol cartridges.

I think I'd try magnum primers too, but I would reduce loads a bit & work back up. I'd also check my crimp, a good heavy roll crimp might help. Don't give up adjusting loads will usually come up with a load your gun likes. Please keep us informed.
Good luck

Increase your crimp and make sure you're using a roll crimp.

7.8 gr of AA#5 pushing a 214 gr LSWC has been one of my favorite and best loads for over twenty years. BUT. . . you have to crimp it pretty well. I use a roll crimp I can easily see without aid of a magnifying glass.

I load only magnum case. I use Tightgroup for my lead specials and W296 with mag CCI for the JHP magnum loads. Works perfect for me.

Never heard of the powder you are using. Maybe go old school, tried and true. 2400 for full magnum loads, Bullseye and/or Unique for the rest.

Heresy Alert! A friend of mine (who is a much better shot than I will ever be) and I (after owning quite a few .44 Specials) have concluded that the cartridge is an overrated one. We have both finally put them on the back burner. Personally I have 1911 .45s and a Ruger .45 Colt that will, if I do my part halfway well, will outshoot any .44s I own.

That's about 5 S&W .44 Specials and 3 .44 Magnums for me, and a few less for him.

I don't worry about it anymore.
