The 22-4 is a good one for general use. 4" barrel and fixed sights. If you can find a used 24-3 they are really nice with the 6 1/2" barrel and adjustable sights. Also the 624s are nice with 4" barrel and adjustable sights, used, as S&W hasn't made them for years. If you have all that brass and stuff you've got to get a 44 special.. :)

Model numbers for N frame .44Spl's are: 24 - blue steel, 624 - Stainless, 696 - L frame stainless and there are apparently a few others like the 22 and I believe an alloy version.

Keep your eyes peeled, they show up every so often and are worth the effort.

I really like my "little" 696.
The only new 44 Spl they are making now is the M 24 with 6.5" barrel (the Classic line)

The model 21-4 is a nice 44 spl that sells reasonable. Here is one that sold for 569 delivered new with lifetime warranty.

I thought a 22 was the 1950 45 ACP? 21 was a 44 special.

Or am I confused? Again.:o

Nope, you are correct. There is a modern version of the M22 out there, similar to the new M21, only with a square butt.

If you want a .44 special that is off the beaten path, you could look at this one:

I was too lazy to get up and look, when I read that post, but I was purty sure this'un, right side middle, was a model 22. And I knew it is a 45.
