I hope to use my 5 inch 625 in an up coming PPC league. We are allowed to use target/gallery loads.

I need a light and accurate load. I will be using full moon clips, Zero 230 gr RN lead bullets. Federal primers. I like 231 and have alot of it on hand. But I am always willing to try something different.

What can you folks recommend?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Used to get spanked on a regular basis by,

Gene Milner and he used a 200/230gr bullet over 4.5gr of W231.

Of course, Gene was a distinguished pistolero with many trophies under his belt. He also had a shooting coat that many folks could only hope to attain to the awards shown there.

Other than that shooting coat, there was never a mention of his accomplishments. He was a truly humble man and a good friend and instructor.

He donated his time to the 4h for many years in shooting sports and has gone on to his reward now.

He used a M625 many time to "give lessons" to those that shot against him in our local PPC league.

I use a different load though. Mine is 4.7gr of Bullseye with a plated 230gr bullet. Shoots real well from both the PT1911 and M625JM. I "give lessons" with that load now! ;)

It all depends on how light you want to go. The problem with 231 is it burns dirty when loaded really light. I use Clays for all my match loads, both Major and Minor PF, and I'll never go back to anything else.

I like 5.3g W231 under a cast 230g TC.

Substitute a RN and all else is the same.

Burns clean, hits hard, accurate.

I use Unique in some of my 45acp loads but mostly use WW231 or HP38 (same thing) and I agree that when loaded down it doesn't burn as clean. I've also used 700X, it worked pretty good but didn't meter all that consistently.

The "Old Standby" is 5.0 Grains of Bullseye.

Good factory duplication load.

I recently loaded up some 230 gr. cast lead round nose bullets with 5.0 grains of Alliant Bullseye. They were a little hot with flattened and some slightly cratered primers and a lot of leading. I would bump it down a couple of tenths.

W231 under a 230 or 200 gr lead head used to be my Go To load. Then I got turned onto Clays. Cleaner, more consistent and less recoil IMHO. I'm never going back. ( BTW, Clays works great in my 38 loads too. 8# goes a Looooooooonnnnnnnng way!)

FWIW, I've also found Long Colt type lead RNFP to work especially well in my fleet of 45acps. Good feeding yet better hole in the target.

3.8gr Clays under a 230gr LRN bullet gets between 750 and 770 fps in my two 625s. It is a fairly clean load with moderate smoke.

My best 230gr lead load is 3.8gr VihtaVouri N-310. It is soft shooting, clean and consistent, with little smoke.

Another good choice is Winchester Super Target. 4.2 to 4.4gr under a 230gr LRN or 5.1gr under a 200gr RNFP give superb results in my 625s. Several fellow competitive revolver shooters have switched from 231 to Clays or WST and haven't gone back.

I have also started using American Select, a low nitro content flake powder, with 200gr. lead loads in my CZ .45 auto and 625. It's a little faster than WST and a little slower than Clays and N310.
