I have shot my S&W Model 25 and several 1911s at 100 yard targets but I had never tried this with my 16" .45 ACP AR15. I tried to find internet and reference book bullet drop information for shooting a 230 grain .45 ACP round to point of aim (POA) at a distance of 100 yards from a 16" carbine barrel. I did not find the information that I wanted so I went out to my local range for field testing. From my research, it seems that some sources said that the bullet would drop about 8 inches and other sources said it would drop more than twice that amount.

I figured that I should see how much bullet drop there was at 50 yards before moving my target out to 100 yards. I was very surprised to find that my sights set for 1" high at 25 yards would group 2" high at 50 yards as shown on the below target.

I moved the target out to 100 yards and found that my group was centered at about 2" below my POA. I raised my POA 2" over my intended target (middle of 6 diamonds) and produced the results seen on the below target. I don't know what my maximum bullet rise is above POA or at what distance this happens but I now know that soda cans are not safe from me at the length of a football field.

Oh. I thought we have been experiencing a small earthquake when I opened the frig, earlier, but I guess it was just the soda cans trembling in fear...

When I was young (yes I was) and thought I was a "Real Man" I carried a Colt Model 1917 with half moon clip and 230gr Gi ball ammo.
From a sitting position I could keep all rounds in the "Kill Area" of a B-27 target at 100 yards distance.
I recently tried that test again and discovered that the B-27 target had gotten a lot smaller and very dim. HOWEVER I was able to hit the backstop (I think?)

I see the fear on those cans. :)

What range is that? Hollywood? I hear Markham is gonna do a clean up and remove the lead.
