.45 ACP cast target loads

Are you shooting bullseye or just whatever? N310 is much cleaner than BE I switched to N310 for competition 4.6 grains under a 200 Chey-Cast coated SWC they make great bullets the weights and diameters are extremely accurate. It's a little spicy but with a Clark heavy longslide it's not too bad. If I want to wimp out I'll shoot 4.0 at 25 yards. Iv'e been doing a lot of ransom rest testing lately noticing when you have an excellent gun most loads shoot well.
I agree. I have been reloading 45 ACP since the 1980's. I used Bullseye because it was cheap and accurate but at the same time it was very dirty especially with lubed lead bullets. I tried W231 and Unique - wow what a difference!

I bought something like 2000 bullets from a guy I met in Kentucky. They are 230 grain lead roundnose bullets lubed with some sort of blue stuff. My Kimber has never malfunctioned with something like 200 of them - I will keep loading the same way.

I have the article, cut out from my cache of old ARs that I eventually discarded. I have no idea how to make it available to you on this forum, but I'll work on it.

As for cast target loads, I doubt any jacketed bullet would be more accurate as long as the bullet fits well and is of the right alloy for the load. I'm not familiar with commercial cast bullets. Perhaps some of them work quite well.

231 is certainly a good powder for cast bullet handgun loads, but you might find excellent accuracy sooner and better with other powders in the .45 ACP. However, I have not worked with it much in the .45 for quite a while. I'd need to work with it again to make any sort of conclusive statement regarding accuracy loads.

I've never used N310 powder but read somewhere (on paper) in the pre-Internet era that it was an excellent accuracy powder in the .45. That's the extent of my sketchy knowledge on the subject, but I'll bet it would be worth a try.
Thanks, rockquarry. If you find a way to post the article I'd appreciate it. Meanwhile, I'll check out the Wayback Machine (www.archive.org) as Exchipy suggests.

Here's the article and the Marine Corps load that pointed me at N310. Despite how well it shoots, it seems I'm always searching for a better load to improve my scores. Can't be the shooter, it's the gun or the ammo . . . . Of course . . . .

I believe this is the article you folks are looking for. The forum loaded them in reverse order.

5.5 grains unique under 230 gn lrn is the consistently accurate cast load am using. Up it to slightly over 6.0 gns for jrn.
