45 ACPWheel Gun Love It Or Leave It

I have the Model of 1988 with 5 " tube and I'm like JC as it shoots far better then I can hold it. I loaded up some lead poof loads for indoor shooting and shot them at a distant snow bank first. They were actually visible. I upped the bullseye so I could avoid the laughter and harassment of having my bullets ricochet off the floor :-) j/k

I hate to be rude but it seems idiotic to me that someone would
knowingly choose a specially designed semi auto cartridge to
shoot in a revolver. the ACP part of the name is there for a reason.
Why not do it in 45 LC so the cartridge has a proper rim which
is more or less designed for revolvers or vice versa.

If you were to say you had a dozen 1911 pistols and thousands
of empty shell casings and you reload etc etc and it makes sense
to stick with 45 ACP then maybe I could understand.

Who the heck needs to deal with moon clips ? ! !

No words necessary

preventec47, to each his or her own. What is "idiotic" to you makes perfect sense to me. Since it is my money, I tend to buy what I want to buy. I like the .45ACP revolver, and with the proper tool, I really don't mind the moon clips. I don't mean to be rude either, but last I checked, it is OK to own the guns I chose to own. Here are a couple of my "idiotic" purchases that please me greatly.

Just because you think it's idiotic don't mean it is for the rest of us. Some of us actually like these guns and moon clips. To each their own.

Well, I do have a ton of .45 ACP brass and several .45 ACP pistols and I do reload. But, I have also carried .45 ACP revolvers as my police duty guns.

No other revolver reloads as fast as a .45 ACP using full moon clips. I could reload during qualifications as fast and usually faster than my fellow officers that were using semi autos.

I had carried .44 and .45 revolvers and used speedloaders. I discovered that two (2) full moon clips, one with the bullet noses down and one with the noses up would fit in each pouch. I then was able to carry 24 rounds on my belt instead of 12.

I own several .45 Colt revolvers and love that old round. However, it is easier to find defensive ammo in .45 ACP, plus it is cheaper.

There are lots of reasons to carry a wheelgun that is chambered in a semiauto round. :)

If you noted my post you will see I felt at least a little similar to you.

But all I sense from your post is that like myself back then you too have never handled one. Go find one and shoot it for an afternoon and you will see the light. If however you fail to see the light then they just aren't the gun for you. Nothing more, nothing less.

Two things. First, I don't use moon clips except in my Webley. I've always been able to shake out or pick out the empties with a fingernail. Second. .45ACP is a LOT cheaper than .45Colt, yet the ballistics are similar. And Ruger Revolvers with .45ACP cylinders are great to shoot with, the two cartridges hit close to the same point with the 230gr or 250 gr or 200 gr slugs.

I walked into the local gun store with no intention of purchasing a firearm of any type. My dear friend behind the counter handed me a 625 PC with red, white, and blue grips. It felt very good in my hand except for the grips. I told my friend that I didn't like the grips. He baited me and out came a new set of grips. I couldn't put the handgun down. It was stuck to my hand, it had to go home :). I bought a number of mooners and demooners and found some that worked very well. I still have not decided on lead or jacketed bullets. I use this firearm for my carry gun in the out of doors. I still like my semi-auto 45's (I have four) but My favorite is now the wheel gun. :)

I LOVE my Thunder Ranch Model 22 and have a 625 PC on the way. Big bore, low recoil...what's not to love?

I love the 45 acp round and I love having a revolver that eats he same rounds as my beloved 1911's

There are a lot more 45 acp cartridges available than 45 long colt

As for moon clips I even like my 357's to be ale to use them

I bought a 4" 625-3 mostly because I have a couple of 1911s and thought having a revolver that takes the .45 acp made a lot of sense as I could reload 1 load for 3 different guns. When you use the Rimz plastic moon clips you get all of the advantages of loading and unloading the gun quickly and consolidating your brass neatly without having to use the tools to load and de-moon. This gun has immediately become my favorite (sorry 686-1). In fact, I've been thinking about having my 686 cylinder machined to accept moons as well. Shoot one of these things and you won't question their appeal.

 OK, it is time to get rid of the moon clips and get a smarter revolver. Granted, its single action, but the Ruger New Model Blackhawk .45 Colt with Extra .45ACP Cylinder (Ruger® New Model Blackhawk® Distributor Exclusives Single-Action Revolver Models) is the way to go. Why? The folks at Ruger have build a cylinder that uses the same type of system as the 1911 for seating the round in the chamber, there is a shoulder in the ACP cylinder (yup, there are two cylinders with this revolver) that uses head spacing (base of case to neck). The only problems with this revolver are: (1) the extra cylinders are hand fitted for the revolver it is issued with and (2) it is single-action only. Maybe Ruger can be coerced into making a .45ACP Redhawk in the future... If enough of us express an interest it might happen.:D

What a great idea.
I guess that is why S&W did it 96 years ago with the Model 1917!
All S&W 1917's can be fired without moonclips because they have a square shoulder for the case to headspace on. I've done it a lot.
