Any good loads for 45 Colt with 250 grain lead or jacketed bullets. Shooting from a Blackhawk and a Miroku version of an 1873 Winchester.. Thanks in advance. Ken

Don't Hot Rod the 73, it is nowhere as strong as the 92 of any brand. I have a 73 in 44 Special, and use no Skeeter loads!

A good powder for handgun and carbine loads on the mild side is WW231/HP38 (same powder and data) 6.7 grains is good with any cast bullet weight. My light loads are about like 45 ACP Ball ammo.

The materials in the Miroku '73 action are supposed to be far superior to those used in the original Winchester '73. And Miroku also chambered a version in .44 Magnum, so it can't be all that weak. I have no personal experience with shooting the Miroku '73. But I do own two Mirokus, a shotgun and a revolver. Both are very high quality.

The 73 weakness is in the action design , a toggle link that was used in the 1860 Henry . Larger parts but the 73 still uses
the toggle link . Not a exceptionaly strong design .
Model 92's and model 94's use sliding solid blocks , a much stronger design .
Modern steel will let you get away with some higer pressures but don't get carried away ... the design is still a toggle link ...
which is like having a top break revolver ... Even new modern steel top breaks are not as strong as solid frame revolvers ...it's simply in the design .

No argument at all that the 1892 (and 1894) actions are designed to be stronger than the 1873's toggle link action, and nothing I said implied that was not the case. But the fact is that the Miroku and Uberti 1873 toggle actions are designed and manufactured to be adequately strong to withstand proof loads for .357 and .44 Magnum. And if they were chambered in those calibers, at least some owners will certainly fire full-house .357 and .44 Magnum loads in them on occasion. I would not, but that is beside the point.

I shoot a 250gr lead RNFP bullet on 8.3gr unique in a miroku 1892 and new vaquero. I just got a chronograph and will visit the range soon for data.

I'm also planning to try a few loads with titegroup powder. I'm very happy with the way titegroup meters in my lee powder measure and the way it shoots in my .38spl wadcutter loads. I expect to like the powder in my .45lc loads even better than unique

I think 8 grains would be a good load. I love Universal (bought 4 lbs of it back in 2019) but reloading data is scarce and far between. The data on the Hodgdon site is the best place to look. Loads are based on turn of the century Colt SAA (13000 cup) so they should be good in both your revolver and rifle. Universal is much the same as Unique except it meters really well.
