Im considering conversion of 45 colt. Would like to see 45 ACP moon conversions and hear your opinion on value of change. Also who did conversion.

Doesn't look any different than the gun you started with - except for the rear of the cylinder. I converted a 25-13 .45 Colt Mountain Gun to add versatility. I have three .45 ACP/.45 AR guns so have a lot of moon clips and ammo, plus the tools to make using them painless. With CAS so prevalent now, .45 Colt is easy to obtain. Mine is just meant to be a fun-gun...

Tom at TK Custom did the conversion and it's flawless.

Machined Revolver Cylinders - TK Custom

Good luck with your decision.

Adios,

Pizza Bob - how does the accuracy of .45 ACP compare to that of .45 Colt?

Nice gun, btw.

I was wondering the same thing...i have a Stainless Mountain gun and was thinking about doing this.

And I was wondering when you shoot 45 colt can you still reload the brass after this conversion?

The conversion is great, the only thing to think about is point of impact, using about the same weight bullets will provide almost the same impact. Other then that all is great, the brass comes out fine and is reloadable with out any problems, tommy I sent ya a pm. I love my converted SS MG and will never sell it.

I have a 25-5 that has had the cylinder machined so that it will take moon clips, and it still fires 45 colt of course, but I found that using 45 Winchester magnum brass loaded to 45 colt levels is a much better idea, and much more accurate. The mag brass is only about 1/8 shorter that colt brass, and is like long 45 ACP brass, so it's like shooting 44 spl in a 44 mag when it comes to how far the bullet has to travel to get to the cylinder throats. 45 win mag brass is more robust as well. I'm throwing a 255 gr RNFPLB at about 950 fps+. Its the Goldilocks setup for me.

I had never given this any thought. Using shortened 45 Win Mag brass with moon clips, you would never lose any of your converted cases. The 45 Win Mag brass is heavy duty, like 45 Super and 460 Rowland cases. It should last forever in a 45 Colt cylinder, as you would need to keep it to 45 Colt pressure levels. Great Idea Moon Clip loading speed with 45 Colt Power.

Moon conversions of .45 Colt to ACP are almost mandatory! In another few years you will expect a moon clip conversion as "stock." The .45 Colt is a VERY accurate round IF the bullets match the chamber mouths! For many years, shooters with Colt pattern 1873's were shooting .452" lead slugs from .454" and larger cylinder mouths, down .454" bores...naturally accuracy suffered. Nowadays much of the LEAD factory ammo is loaded with .454" bullets and this brings accuracy up to par with the likes of the .44 Magnum.

BTW moon clips conversions aren't JUST about shooting the ACP from a "Long Colt" cylinder...it's also about being able to load up .45 COLT ammo in moon's...go to TK Custom's website to read all about it.

Thank you for your responses and Win Mag suggestion. Always get good info on SW4m

conversion

I have a 625-6 mountain gun in 45 Colt.If I have it converted to use 45 acp in moon clips can I use 45 auto rim in it.Don't mean to hijack the thread.Thanks.

No, the rims on AR are too thick. The conversion removes material from the center of the cylinder so that an ACP moon clip will sit flush and leaves a ledge around the rim so that 45 Colt brass will still head space and eject properly.

The Cylinder was sent out and now the waiting starts. I ordered ten moonclips for 45 acp, but 75 bucks for 10 moonclips for 45 colt?

I don't need 10 moonclips in 45 colt maybe 3-5...If anybody has a few they want to sell let me know.

Got the cylinder back today and since I sent my buddy's Ruger redhawk cylinder too, Tom was nice enough to split a pack of then 45 Colt moonclips between the two.

What a great job and fast turn around. If anybody is on the fence about sending out their cylinder to TK Custom don't be. Great work, great people to deal with, and great communication.
