45 Colt Problem

I want a smokeless powder suitable for the extra large case of a 45 Colt. Years ago I tried Trail Boss. It worked but at 1/2 pound for the same price of a full pound of any other I considered it non available. I also consider 50$ per pound of anything else non available.

Sure TrailBoss fills the case better, but Win 231/HP-38 work just fine for me. The charge is nowhere near 75%, but that powder is not position sensitive. I tested that years ago in .38 Special target loads.

Team 45 Colt

O.P. - nice collection you have.

The 45 Colt is one of my favorite cartridges.
Nice to shoot and easy to reload.

I’m always on the look out for S&Ws with a
Colt name on it.

Hope there’s a Česká zbrojovka / Colt
Anaconda 45 Colt coming soon.

I bought a Blackhawk convertible in .45 Colt just as covid was starting in February 2020. I sold it because .45 Colt was even more impossible to find than other ammo and its cost was even more ridiculous than other ammo.

So, I sold it and bought a couple of 1873 clones in .357 that I thought I might use for CAS.

Now I reload. So, I’m thinking I might was to buy some .45 colt 1873 clones and a .45 Colt lever.

My problem is I don't have as many as I'd like to have

What he said!!!

I had two .45/c Charles Daly SAA replicas, one was a Bisley model, that I let get away, and a stainless Charles Daly SAA that also got away.

These, however, have remained with me safe and sound.....

My two SA revolvers were the last handguns I bought. Never thought I'd want one but the first one ( 5-1/2" Colt 1873 clone) was a real hoot so I got a second one (7-1/2" Remington 1875 clone). Then I thought "I don't have a lever action of anything" so I bought the Henry Big Boy and stayed with .45 Colt. It is a great rifle, standing freehand and shooting the steel silhouettes at 50 yards as fast as I can rack in another round and get back on target is as much fun as I've had with a rifle. I reload, and .45 Colt is an easy round to load. I use one load for all four guns, gives me from about 875 fps in the 4" M25-5 to just over 1100 fps in the 20" rifle, and I have a hotter round for the rifle only that is around 1450 fps for longer than 50 yards shooting. I changed the rear sight on the rifle to a Skinner peep sight from the buckhorn it came with and it is a lot easier to shoot accurately.

My brother had a S&W 25-5 with 8 & 3/8” barrel. It was a LSI period gun from the mid 80s. He was the original owner.
LSI worked out all the dimensional problems of the earlier 25-5s. It would shoot brilliantly with just about any sensible load, all using cast bullets anywhere from 185 to 255 gr. In fact, it was probably the most accurate S&W of that era that I’d ever shot.
And, that includes genuine black powder loads!!

We had good times together shooting and reloading for it.
Unfortunately, when he decided he needed to sell it, I had just finished grad school and was newly married. We barely made enough to pay rent and groceries. So, that gun moved on to someone else’s life.

Cherish and hold on to those great guns in your life. And, that goes double if there’s any fond personal memories attached to it.

Yes, two big thumbs up for those nice 45 Colts!!
