Okay, it's the 4th of July and what could be more patriotic than to exercise my 2nd amendment rights? So I pack up the range bag and I'm off to go rent a 45acp. When I get to the range there are only three to choose from; a Springfield Armory compact 1911, a full size Glock, and some type of Beretta. I wanted to try the heralded 1911 platform so I opted for the Springfield. I was also comforted by the weight. It was the parkerized GI micro that I've since discovered weighs 33 ounces with an empty magazine. It's small but deceptively heavy. Sort of reminded me of the Kahr MK9 in that regard. Here's a link the manufacturer's description: Springfield Armory

I had my 3913 with me, which I haven't shot in awhile. I thought that might make an interesting comparison given they are about the same size, although the 3913 is about 8 ounces lighter. So off I went to the lane and loaded them both up. Set the target to 7 yards and blasted away.

Both guns operated flawlessly. I found the 1911 surprising easy to shoot. I could definitely feel the increased power associated with pushing a bigger ball, but it wasn't particularly snappy. The big holes in the paper are certainly impressive. I would say I was slightly quicker with my follow up shots with the 3913, because I could recover from the recoil a little quicker, but my accuracy was comparable. Being left handed, no way I would feel comfortable carrying the 1911 without an ambi safety. I didn't feel comfortable trying to flip it down with my trigger finger. Also, I feel I could shoot the 3913 for a longer period without feeling beat up or tired. I don't think I would want to shoot the 45 acp out of a platform that was much lighter than the 33 ounce Springfield Armory, although I think the flex of the polymers might help, and HK has some sort of recoil reduction system which might help. On the down size I shot neither as well as I shot my HK P7 during my last range visit. The P7 is a tack driver, and can make even a mediocre shooter, like me, look pretty good.

I think I may need to try a few other variants before I make a decision if I'm going to add the caliber to my collection.

I feel your pain for being left handed. One of my favorite pistols is a CS45, but it only has the safety on the left hand side. Its very awkward to switch off the safety with the left index finger or thumb, but with practice it is can be done. My other 45's, a 4513TSW and 4566TSW both have the ambi safety. If possible try to find and shoot a 4513 before making any decisions.

I'm not left handed, but I'd assume the Glock would probably be easiest to work with. The safety is the booger finger. Nothing to fumble with.

Of course, my Colt just feels like it has so much more character than my Glock... But than again, I CARRY my Glock.

I used to have a G29 10mm. Recoil wasn't bad at all. Traded it for a G20, since I found out carrying a larger firearm isn't much harder than a "sub compact". Of course, your recoil sensitivity might be different.

Good luck on whatever you choose!

A full size 1911 with an ambi safety will feel very nice to you. There are also 1911s in 9mm that work well, full size and compact.

I am another "Lefty".Came into the world of Semi-Auto's after I became a instructor so I could effectively teach both.My CS 9 has a Ambi-Safety decocker but I didn't like having to go from a DA to SA trigger pull and I constantly pulled follow up shots cause the dinosaur is too used to something being either SA or DA.It went to the armorers @ S+W and is now DAO.No decocker/safety,no changing trigger pulls,no levers just the way I like it.We all should have National Lefty Day where we demand that GUN Manufactures have models that eject to the left for the same price.WE are tired of the hot brass dance and think it is descrimination...LOL God Bless........Mike

Yet another southpaw chiming in.

I've got the Smith 4566 with the ambi-safety, and 2 1911's (with a third on its way). The Kimber, and a Taurus. I know I'm going to get some flack for this, but in a contest, my Taurus wins, hands down, over my Kimber. The Taurus just has a better fit n finish. And a smoother trigger. Both have the ambi-safety feature. The third 1911 is on order, a 4" Les Baer. Definitely a far better gun than my abilities will ever realize.

Not a lefty, but I shoot both hands. I had a S&W1911 at one point and sold it like an idiot. I will have another one at some point! But, I was comfortable shooting it with my left as well as my right.

A Taurus and a Les Baer -- your collection will have an impressive price spread.
