4505

I need some opinions on the value of two 4505's I own. I don't plan on selling them, but I am trying to value my collection for both insurance and estate value. One is well used, with the finish a little rough, and some light rust on the edges. It rode in the door of my sheriffs office unit for ten years as a back-up. Hard life, about 90 % finish left. The other is in the box. Oddly enough the box was originally for a mod 4263, but a new S&W label was put over that one. It says 4506 Sales Sample, with the serial no. and UGSW4505 on it. The tool kit and paperwork are in it. It too has some wear, but not much. Still has the little orange chamber plug.
I just need a ball park figure to put down for value. As close as possible , but I can't post pics right now, so an educated guess will do. Thanks.

As it happens I have been doing a lot research on the 4505, I got a 4506 and now want the blue 4505.

It seems there were about 1200 of them made in the early 90s on the dash 1 frame, from what I have seen overall they seem sell at 10-20% premium over a stainless 4506 in similar condition to those who know what they are.

For insurance value I would also factor in an estimate of how much you think it will be worth at the next point you revise your policy. 3rd Gens have been steadily increasing in price over the last few years.

Never heard of a 4263.

Remember, since these guns are no longer made, condition is EVERYTHING. I have seen pristine 4505s go for over $1500. Mine is in great shape and I think I paid like $800 +/- a couple bucks.

Most people will tell you the best place to gauge value is one of the many auction sites. While LGS are great, they are usually more expensive due to overhead, etc.

Pictures would greatly help, but if it is TRULY new in the box, I would conservatively say start @ $1000 and go from there.

Remember, it was manufactured for only one year. While not rare, it is not a frequently encountered piece.

I don't think the relative rarity of the blued model will make much difference over a 4506 to the eyes of an adjuster. Third gens are still in that weird zone between "old guns" and "collectables". In the event of a total loss, the time / effort to itemize down to the individual gun unless it has substantial providence.

$500-$600 would probably get you into nice 4506's

I would be moderately interested to see the box label you mentioned, does it match the serial number on the gun? It's an odd format for the serial number.

Maybe pictures of both ?

The box is odd. It has what appears to be a factory type label stuck over the original label. The part that shows under the newer label has 4263 printed over the model no. spot. (I have never heard of a model 4263 either. That might be something other than the model no. and just be printed on top of the model no. spot) I will try to get pictures of it next week. The new label begins" 4505 S & W SALES SAMPLE" Then there is a very long bar code under that. Under the bar code is printed " UGSW4505 THC76** (serial no. on gun) 46755S. But oddly on the bottom of the other label that sticks out under the top one is THC76**1083162038. This contains the gun serial no. also.
The gun is not unfired. It was a sample, and I assume that it was shot to some extent before I got it. I shot it several boxes of shells back in the early 90's myself. It shows some wear on it, but not much.
