I have found a 4506-1 in 95% condition for a good price. It appears to have the Gen 3 "hitch" in the trigger, although upon examination, I didn't know what I was seeing at the time, until doing some research on this forum (please forgive me, as I know there are other posts regarding this issue). I don't recall feeling the "hitch" with the mag removed and pulling the trigger, but only with the mag inserted and the gun decocked and the trigger pulled through its full travel. I do not recall any abnormalities other than that and it may be that what I'm seeing is something having to do with the mag disconnect safety. I am going back tomorrow to examine the gun further. Any advice/tips are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A weak/worn/bent trigger play spring is the cause of the single action "click." It won't do it in DA. Has no real effect on function other than to be annoying. Won't feel it with the mag removed due to the disconnect.

The spring can be "adjusted" by gently pushing forward on it with a pencil eraser. Remove slide and look for a small brass clip sticking up. It's not a coil spring in that sense. This may fix it, at least temporarily. It only works for a mag or two in my 4566 and starts clicking again. It needs replacing. There're some more threads here with more detailed instructions and possibly photos if you run a search.

Thanks for this info also.. I have a 6906 with a course trigger with the mag in and smooth with the mag out but no clicking yet. If anyone finds the links could you post them here.. I would like to have a look too.. I have a unfired 4506 and it's as smooth as glass with or without the mag.. I didn't know there both 3'd gen guns.. I think I got the 4506 in 1998 it's unfired because it's a NHSP anniversary gun for there 60th, laser engraved.. Thought it may go up in value as the years go by.. George

EDIT!!
Sorry, .. My unfired Smith is a 4566 not a 4506 as I posted in Post #3.. it's been years from pulling it out and looking and the model number.. Thought I better check.. I may have referred to it the same in a few other posts I made yesterday also.. Again sorry! George

I love the 4506, probably my favorite pistol of all time. It is a haus to say the very least, probably one of the toughest out there. The spring issue is minor and in no way effects the gun's reliability. The current magazine revision calls for black followers. I have magazines with orange, yellow, black, and I think one has a metal follower. You will run across magazines with steel floor plates, but those are usually, but not always, magazines from 645s. The 4506 is a big, forgiving pistol in my opinion. I own two 4506s, a 1006, and a 4526. I also have a 4505 on the way. It is a great pistol, one which you will not regret purchasing.

Thanks

Thanks for the information. This pistol has the spring that is "bridged" at the top rather than two "prongs." I can't visualize this ever breaking, so if I elect to get this pistol I'll probably just use as is. So long as the trigger is just released to the the "reset" point, one would never know anything was amiss. Additionally, S&W indicated that since I was not the original purchaser, the repair would not be under warranty and shipping would not be covered.
