I recently purchased a 4506-1 with it's standard barrel and a bar-sto barrel chambered in .40 super. This gun also has the menck recoil dissipating guide rod. I was told this firearm was featured in the July 2000 issue of gun world magazine in an article about 40 super. In general I would like to know more about 4506's chambered/modified for .40 and .45 super. I have a pretty good knowledge of how those cartridges were developed but I am having some issues finding solid reloading data. Right now I have 3 main questions about this guns setup.

1. Does anyone out there have the July 2000 gun world issue? I would like to either purchase it or just get a scanned copy of the article to verify this gun was in the magazine.

2. I need some spring replacement and tuning info on the menck recoil guide rod. The main recoil spring is not the standard length spring for that gun. It is more similar to a 4566 recoil spring length. I will probably start experimenting with different 4566 springs but I was just looking for a starting point. I do not have a stock guide rod yet but I am trying to obtain one. Does anyone have one for sale?

3. Does anyone else run or ran a similar setup in the past?

I am really excited about unlocking the potential of this platform and I greatly appreciate any input someone has to offer. Thanks, 3rdgenman

I was watching your gun on GB and would have bid but had bought 2 other 3rd gen guns recently and was tapped out. Great Buy !!!

I have no information for you but am really curious about the .40 super barrel. Will you use the standard 4506 (45acp) mags?

Please write up a detailed post in future as a lot of us would love to know more about this unique pistol.

From my knowledge yes the factory magazines will work as the 40 super is generally loaded to 1.250 in OAL. I am slowly attempting to compile info and history of this gun and cartridge. I received some load data and history from Tony Rumore of tromix arms in Tulsa, OK and I tracked down Tom Menck (of menck recoil guide rod fame) whom I need to send a letter to for more info. It's gonna be a interesting project!

.40 Super is a necked down .45 Winchester Magnum case. Take a look at some of the loads underwoodammo.com sells for this. For a 200 grain bullet it bumps the speed up another 150 fps.

Just curious. Why a .40 Super? Is this a necked down .45, or what?
The 45ACP necked down to 40 is known as the 10 Centaur. The 40 Super is formed from a stronger parent ase for greater pressures

What does it do that a 10mm doesn't?
It allows you to get roughly 10MM performance from a 45ACP 1911 with just a barrel swap.

Changing a 45ACP to 10MM would require a new barrel, slide, recoil spring, ejector and magazine.

Only Underwood & Double Tap offer 40 Super ammo currently and , to the best of my knowledge, nobody offers dies for it at this time!
It becomes an expensive but powerful cartridge not for the casual plinker.

.40 super has very close to the same case length as a 10mm. Reloading dies are currently available from rcbs and redding. Many people get 400 Corbon confused with the .400 super. The primary design differences are that the 40 super has a longer neck for better neck tension, which can be troublesome with the 400, and the case is heavier built and uses small pistol primers. The 400 uses large primers. The higher bullet weights is not necessarily where the 40 super shines. The original load developers pushed as high as 2000 fps with 135gr bullets!

Why is the 40 Super bbl marked 40S&W?
From what I have gathered is that this barrel was made early on in the cartridges development. They may have marked it just to note the bore size. The chamber is definitely for the 40 super.
