I have a 4506 no dash with less than a thousand rounds through it (I have owned the gun since new).

The gun fails to extract once every 50-100 shots, with different brands of factory ammo. The spent case comes out either a few millimeters or almost completely, but then it is left there by the extractor.

I already have a couple of spare extractors, but before starting to replace anything I would like to know what might be causing the failures with the current extractor.

Is there some test I could perform? Are there some typical problems which could be seen by looking at the extractor claw? etc

I have not disassembled the extractor yet so dirt in the extractor channel is one possibility. The gun has been sitting in the safe for more than a decade and I do not remember it malfunctioning before, so something has probably changed.

Can you guide me in my search for the source of this problem?

is your extractor firm with spring tension or is it easily moved (with little pressure) or flops around?

does it have the hook and does it appear to be damaged or chipped.

I've got one that started doing this too about 2 years ago. I took out the extractor and cleaned behind it; reassembled it with a new extractor spring. Didn't seem to help much.

I was told by a 'smith to polish the chamber with 600 grit paper. I may have had one failure to extract since then, but doing that one thing improved the performance dramatically.

This is new to me. I have owned two, and still own one, a 4506-1. Both of the ones I've owned were as reliable as anything I've ever owned. It has to be, it is my CCW gun and I carry it everywhere. I'd like to know when you get it fixed what the trouble was. Good luck!

Gun 4 Fun, do a search or a Find here on the forum and you should pull up a thread on this that was started in January of this year. Lots of really good information about this topic. Way more information than you would expect. Put in the words..."Failure to Extract."
