S&W 3rd Gen sights:
- front 74° x .250"
- rear 74° x .435"
That's different from other Novak dovetail dimensions.
The 4506's standard front dot sight is listed as .245" tall. On the pistol mine measures ~.238".

Lazurus, if you are looking at F/O sights you want to go to Dawson Precision, they are one of the few companies making F/O sights that are specific to 3rd gen S/W. The height of the front sight will depend on what rear sight you have on that gun. Original or did someone change it out to a night sight. They have several options as to height, width etc. I reallylike their sights as it is very well made leaving sharp edges for when you want to be precise.
I currently have a 3rd gen sight on the front of my m&p. Leads me to believe that the m&p dovetail might be the same. If this is correct, then there are lots of sight options.
For a 4506, go with the Dawson Precision sight labeled for a "E" series 1911. Those are the ones with the S&W cut dimensions but with the full width sight base. Their sights for a 5906 have a narrow base and do not fill the cut on a 4506 or any other of the large frame guns for that matter.

Bill, does this confirm my suspicions that the gen3, M&P, and E series are all the same except for width?
I have a dawson fiber on my 1026 I no longer want... it was obviously fit to the gun, but may work for yours sir ?!
I looked at MP front sight (trijicon HD) and it appeared the base was too shallow for 3rd gen. If someone knows what model trijicon HD might work for a 3rd gen, please let me know. Trijicons answer is they dont make a HD for 3rd gen S/W. I have several bad front night sights , maybe they can relamp them with the HD type orange filler or not. I will have to check that route.

I had this discussion with them last year. They will not relamp HDs or S&W factory night sights with HDs, only standard white outline vials. You can select between green, yellow, and orange tritium, but it’s only visible at night.
