I have a chance to pick up a 4516 with two mags for about $325. The pistol is in Good-VG condition with no major flaws/dings, etc. I'm thinking it was a duty gun (read: carried allot, rarely shot) and that any marks would polish out very well. I've had a 4506 before so know it's workings fairly well.

Problem is that I currently have 8 other 45's (4 of them S&W's) and don't need another. Especialy a somewhat heavy carry gun. Still it calls me and the price seems nice for a fien piece of S&W 45. I just really have NO idea what I would do with it other than to shoot it once or twice and then stick it in the safe. So please, talk me out of it ( if you can.)

It can't hurt to have another spare. I'm carrying a 4516-1 on-duty as I type this (well, actually eating breakfast so I can check smith-wessonforums.com) and I've got a 2 "spare" 4516s at home.

I'd carry and use it..

Dave:

if cash flow is not a consideration for you, you can always but this gun up and see if you like it. Then, if not, sell it on the classifieds on this forum.

Some guys on the forum aren't really good at finding clean 3rd gens at their LGS's or online - so you'll probably make someone very happy if you decide not to keep the gun

I wouldn't talk you out of that one. My 4516-1 is a truly great pistol. At that price you should jump on it. Heck, I keep saying that I won't buy another 45, as I have many, but I always do.

BTW, my understanding is that the 4516 wasn't really intended to be a concealed carry gun but more of a smaller duty pistol.

The 4516 with two mags in the condition you have described is well worth $325. I would guess it is worth as much as $400. The problem with the 4516 is that it is something of a specialty item now. It is a compact all steel gun. Most people want a lighter weight gun in a compact. I own a 457S that I carry on most days. I look at offers for 4516s and they tempt me but I know that I would probably not carry it because it is 7 ounces heavier. The fact is that a value line 457S is probably worth as much as a 4516. But, if you decide to buy the gun, you could almost certainly sell it for more at anytime in the future.

I carried a 4516 on & off duty for a while. The weight didn't bother me, what killed it off was the slide-mounted safety that activated during a qualifier one day. Figured if it could happen there, it could happen on the street, and your normal failure drills don't get it running again in a hurry.
The safety was just one more thing that could go wrong, if inadvertently bumped or swiped.

I still have it, have a certain fondness for the thing. The hefty weight is actually something of a confidence builder, for me.
Were it not for that blasted safety, I'd quite likely be carrying it today.

I've worked with the .457, nice, but in that configuration I'd stick to the 4516 if I were actually going to be using one for serious purposes.

Not a bad price.

4516 to 1016

Buy it, get with BM1 and turn it into a compact 10mm fire breathing dragon :)

I am doing the 4013 conversion. If the light weight is a problem, I will be looking for a 4516.

Buy it, shoot it, love it! Great price on the best compact 45 out there....IMO of course. Regards 18DAI.

Blasphemy!

Love my 4586, even the DAO doesn't bother me. Weighs alot though.

Just go buy it :)

Have fun and be safe.

Be kind to us. Some people (ME!) are looking for a 4516. If you aren't going to buy it, please tell us where it is, so that we can.

NO!!! DO NOT BUY IT!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT UNTIL YOUR LAST DAYS!!! (Hey, you asked me to tell you not to buy it):D.

Go ahead and buy it, you won't regret it. You know you NEED IT more than you want it. If SWMBO said "NO" even more reason to buy it and sneak it inside when she is not looking. IF she catches you sneaking it into the house, repeat after me, "What, This Old Thing??? I've had this old thing for YEARS".

Hard to pass that deal up. I say go for it!

I say go for it. I have a 4516-1 that I carry concealed everyday. The weight has never been a problem and it is one of the most accurate guns I own. Buy and enjoy!

Buy it. If you get to feeling real guilty about your abundance of .45s I'll trade you a nice Case knife and a bag of circus peanuts :)
