I recently purchased a used agency trade in 4566 in .45, with a decocker only, no safety. It shoots great and heavy as a Mack truck. It will be used mainly for home defense and I will never carry it. Has anyone had a problem with the trigger? I can feel and hear a "crunch or click" or similar noise when I squeeze the trigger. It only happens after the first shot from "double action" to the subsequent signal action. That's the best way I can describe this noise. Anyone else have this noise? Like I said, the pistol shoots fine with no FTE or FTF, but the noise is annoying.

your trigger play spring is out of adjustment or broke off.

its only job is to keep the trigger from flopping around.

if the spring is there, bump it fwd with a pencil (eraser side) to tighten.

if you over do it, you break the fragile spring.

I broke mine one time and shot a high round school with it missing.

if you never take your finger off the trigger, and keep the slack taken up, you will never know its missing.

its the riveted gold colored spring

field strip the gun and make sure your in DA mode when you bump fwd.

if its missing and you want to replace, the parts are cheap, but you have to do a full break down.

Thank you SW CQB 45...your information is correct. When I have my slide off the frame, and I press the trigger, I can really hear the crunch/click noise coming from that location. Now, the real important question is if I don't replace that spring, will that cause a malfunction? how does one do a full "break down?"

Yeah, my spring is broken, the end tab is missing and I can see how the trigger is lifting up each time I press the trigger. Thanks for your help.

done_chasing The spring is held in place with a small rivet. Once you take it completely apart and have the drawbar out use a dremel and remove the head of the rivet. Small pin punch to drive the rest of the rivet out. Replace the spring-new rivet and then use a center punch on a bench block to re stake the new rivet. Sounds harder than it really is. E-mail me at rmagedn182@yahoo I have a whole box of springs and rivets if you need one. Bob

Had the same problem with a 4566TSW, and, as always, SW CQB 45 is on the money.

Sent it to S&W, they paid for two way shipping, and the repairs.

It's fixed, but I can't really say it's as smooth a trigger pull as my 5906TSW, but it's much improved.

I guess then, I should take this one out of my home duty rotation until I get this little problem fixed. I have other .45's to take its place. It shoots fine and never had any problems with it, but then again, it only takes one malfunction to create the "OH S**T!!" problems. Thanks for all the useful information.

It will not cause a malfunction. It just keeps the slack out of the trigger to make for a smoother trigger action.

Yes. Your 4566 will still work just fine. The CHP had the trigger play springs removed from all their old 4006TSW before they replaced them with new ones. When they got newer 4006TSW they had them all made up with out the trigger play springs.

I have a PC 45 CQB (similar to the 4566) and have the same problem with the trigger spring. In my case the spring has completely broken off.

My 45 CQB has served me as my conceal pistol of choice, despite the weight. I also regularly shoot this gun almost every time I am at the range. This pistol's reliability and durability is truly impressive. Although, I believe the spring broke off several months ago I have probably have put 200-400 rounds through the gun without any issues in its current condition. However, I do plan on fixing the spring.

On an interesting note the re-coil spring (which I should have replaced long ago) also broke. About a 1/4" of the recoil spring snapped off (relaxed length). S&W sent me a replacement recoil spring free of charge. This happened maybe 6 months ago.

Keep in mind I have owned this pistol for almost ten years and fired a great number of rounds through this gun. To be honest I am debating if I should mail the gun to S&W for servicing, attempt to fix the spring myself, take it a gun smith or do nothing. I would feel more comfortable with S&W doing the work but completely feel uncomfortable without having this gun.

Anyone have suggestions? Has anyone fixed the spring themselves? What kind of lead times would be expected to have S&W service the "trigger spring"/gun?

When I sent my 4566 to Novak's to put some new sights on, I had them do a trigger job...seemed to have smoothed things out...I had the same gritty sort of pull you describe, although not sure if I had the same exact issue you are experiencing.
Here's a link in case you want to check out their service.
