457 questions

Hello All,
going to pick a 457 as my 2nd smith auto. Does it take down similar to the 39-2? I cant find any videos of dissemble. Also who makes a good tuckable IWB for it?

Just look up detail strip for 5906. You should be almost exactly the same, except for the De-cocker and the mag release assembly.

well I picked up the 457. $390 with box and 3 mags. looks to be in good shape. I was giving it a basic field strip and had a hell of a time getting that 3rd shorter lever to get pushed down to finish putting it back together, then I was putting the take down pin back it and it seems to not go all the way through. I don't want to force anything. i've attached some bad pictures. Is the pin supposed to sit flush against the frame. Mine has a slight 2-3mm gap. it comes out plenty far on the other end. it all works good but my 39-2 is flush. any ideas?

It's not the best pick, but I think it looks normal. I just checked my 457 and the slide stop sticks out a little on that side as well. It does not sit as flush as some of the other 3rd gens I have.

But the opposite side of the pin on the right side seems good.

Does the slide stop plunger hit the sideplate assembly's kinked end somewhere in the middle as it sticks out from the frame? Or, does it look like it's falling off the end?

everything seems to lock up and work fine. the slide can be locked back with the take down pin and the small spring loaded " button for lack of proper term" does get pushed in. actually now that I look at it again the whole button is completely covered by the other part that is on the frame of the gun. sorry for the bad pictures and lack of terminology

Take a look at the diagram:

I was talking about part 72 (Slide Stop Plunger) and 66 (Sideplate assembly, the part that touches the slide stop plunger at the top of the grip).

If these 2 parts do not interact properly, it can affect function.

Besides, now you can familiarize yourself with terminology.

I just grabbed my 457 out of the safe and took a look. The take down pin is identical to yours. The third lever thing is a pain sometimes on all of my 3rd gen guns. It just takes a little bit of persistence to get it all to come together.

My CS9 and 3914 do the same thing with the take down pin, but my 5906 and 6906 are counter bored so that even though the pin sticks out it doesn't protrude beyond the sides of the frames.

Do I have to many 3rd gen pistols?

it's defiantly #72 but from the diagram it's hard to tell if it's 66 but i'd say it is. the plunger is fully covered and depresses with no problems. Thank you both for checking your pistols and giving advice and info. Much appreciated.
no such thing as to many guns unless your on fire or drowning. saw that somewhere today and it is very true
