Hi all, I'm new to the forum and was hoping that some of you could answer some questions. I purchased a used Model 457 which I like, but would like to make some modifications and learn a little more about the gun.

1. The trigger pull seems excessively high in DA and clicks in SA. Is this normal? Can the trigger be modified?

2. Are there after market handgrips available, prefer wood?

3. DOB s/n VYY4xxx, can anyone tell me the production year?

I have a 457 for my every-day carry gun. My Springfield 1911 became a safe queen when I bought mine. The only modification I made to it was to replace the cheap-o factory plastic sights with XS, 24/7 night sights.

Have the trigger checked by a gunsmith. The clicking sound is from the trigger re-set spring and "thingee." Sorry for not knowing the exact nomenclature, but on the trigger is a small brass piece which frequently gets bent with agressive cleaning. I've had mine fixed a couple of times by my gunsmith. It only takes a few seconds and should be a free-be. After a couple of fixes, I learned how to clean it without damaging it.

Replacement should involve a small charge. Most S&W gunsmiths should have a supply on hand.

I've never seen wood grips for one, but if there are, a google search should find them.

S&W should be able to tell you the age of your pistol.

The "click" culprit is called the trigger play spring, and there's a post on how to fix it somewhere on this forum. It was started by poster done_chasing and answered, with pics, by poster SW CQB 45 (sorry, but you'll have to find it yourself; I've tried just inserting the link here, but no go). As to your double-action pull, well, most people find S&W third-generation autos like the 457 kind of challenging in that regard, so "excessively high" might be just business as usual.
