457 slide material

I just picked up a 457 that is all black. Does anyone know what material the slide is made out of?

The 457 has a budget "black" finish on a carbon steel slide. I stopped asking which specific finish was being applied to various S&W black/"blue" pistols & revolvers. They can change their vendors for such things as often as they may feel practical.

The 457S has a stainless slide.

Plain blued steel. Melonite is a premium process that S&W was not likely to use on value line guns.
