I'm considering purchasing a 4576 to go along with my 1076, but the individual during a what he described as a thorough cleaning took apart the pistol probably more than he should.

After putting it back together he believes he didn't re-assemble the spring right and it now doesn't decock. Functions good and shoots fine otherwise.

He says he couldn;t find pic or diagrams to check against.

He's asking 450 w/ 3 mags.

Questions:

How involved is a possible repair or is it a factory (w/ cost) option?

Or should I just pass on it and pick up a police trade in 4566 or 4516 in the 350 range that both are available at the local gun shop?

Thanks,

Dave

sometime back, maybe last year

there was a picture post of the disassembly and reassembly of a frame mounted decocker.

maybe that forum member will chime in and provide the link.

since its broke, offer 350 and someone hear will set you straight!

Okay, here's the deal, there are approximate 15,000 Model 1076 pistols whereas there are only 1389 (according to Roy Jinks the S&W Historian) Model 4576 pistols. It's definitely worth having. SW CQB 45 is correct, you should consider it "broke" and try to get it for $350 or $400. The other guy probably did not know how to set it back up during reassembly, we can only hope the parts are all in there. By the way, is there any spring action keeping the decock lever up?

As for the photo "how to" regarding frame mounted decockers, here is the link: Frame Decockers by Ronterry

[Old BM1 beat me to it while I was typing my book.]

Keep in mind that there was a recall on all frame-mounted decockers back in the early '90s. S&W will still honor it. If the inspection was done, you will find two little punch marks under the decock lever. So, if there are no punch marks, you could call S&W Customer Service and request a "Call Tag" to send it in for inspection under the recall. S&W will pay shipping both ways.

If, in your letter, you nicely ask the tech to check out the decocker which seems not to be functioning properly, he/she will take care of it for you. Remember, always nicely while remarking what great things you've heard about S&W customer service and techs. Keep in mind that once you get it in their shop, it will probably cost you nothing . . . and the tech/customer service person on the phone is your ticket (or Call Tag) to getting it there without cost to you.

FWIW

Thanks for the link.

I have a 1026 and 1076 so I have been through the return to Smith procedure.

I'll work on a negotiation and hope it hasn't been back for the recall, as I would rather Smith fix the problem.

I'll arraign to see the pistol tommorrow.
