459 model

So I picked up a used 459 model at the gun shop today and was looking to get more informatin. I can’t seem to find the manual in the smith and Wesson website, so was looking at info on how to field strip it.

Also, on Wikipedia it said only 802 of the 459 were made, is there a way to verify that and see if my model is part of the ones the FBI used?

Does yours have a brushed finish?

With the exception of having a removable barrel bushing, the field strip instructions for the model 459 are the same as later 3rd gen models.

That 802 Wikipedia number is the number of 459's made for the FBI, not the total 459 production numbers.

The Standard Catalog of S&W says: 803 manufactured for the F.B.I. with dull brushed blue finish and special high-impact grips. Premium if documented as F.B.I. (most aren’t).

The FBI trail guns have a matt blue finish and the grips are subdued looking . also fixed sights

Appreciate the manual and the info. It's a nice find at the gun shop yesterday. I own several SW rifles and pistols...and haven't heard of this one. So when I saw one, I figured I'd get it....the price was right too so that helped.

I'll take some video when I shoot it and report back.

I have a 459 and a 559 (steel framed version of the 459)... the model number nomenclature for the 2nd gens is 4xx (alloy frame), 5xx (carbon steel frame) and 6xx (stainless steel).

The 459 was my first S&W semi-auto pistol, and it shoots as well as my 3rd gens... I think you're going to like it.

Took her to the range today and fired two magazines. The slide release is a bit sticky and caused the magazine not to sit well initially....but after I figured it out and whacked the magazine in place - worked like a charm and really accurate.

I have the brushed matt finish FBI gun ,It was up for sale for a long time and no one knew what it was , I kept telling them I can get a new M/P for that . They marked it down after a long time and I got it . I did pass a real nice 459 up that just had some holster wear here and there for 299 I kick myself . The Smith autos keep going up .

Keep a close eye on the screw that retains the right side safety lever. These screws are well known for backing out, then flying off, possibly into a low earth orbit, and then the right side lever goes on a journey of its own.
