LGS has a decent 459 forsale, I'm not real familiar with this one. Anybody got an idea of a fair price?

Depends on condition. Given the number of 5906 Police Trade Ins on the market which I consider superior, I'd say the 459 range is 350-500 depending upon condition.

As a side note that's one of the models I would feel weird about getting considering it was the model that SA Jerry Dove was using during the infamous FBI Miami Shootout.

The 459 is a great little 2nd Gen 9mm. Does it have the adjustable sights?
Probably should fetch close to $400 if it is in good condition.

They just keep going up over time . I have a matt finish FBI gun and another 459 and they are flawless . Good clean ones don't come along . They don't make them anymore . BUY IT

Interesting note and I always find it interesting to denote different spots where our favorite pistols appear but I'm struggling a bit on -HOW- you or anyone might feel weird about buying one.

At this point in 2015... seems like there would be precious few model guns made before the year 2000 (or select any arbitrary year) that haven't been involved in some heinous crime or killing.

They're still inanimate objects. I can see how a man would choose to not own a specific handgun that was involved in the untimely death of a loved one... but I'd buy that specific handgun if the deal were attractive. And you aren't even talking about a specific handgun and/or a man you knew. We're discussing the same model and a widely publicized failed FBI raid here.

Would really be no different than feeling odd about a Glock because of the Gabby Giffords shooting or a Rohm because of President Reagan.

To the pistol... I will say that it lends itself best to shooters with large hands. I have large hands and when I picked up my 659 for the first time, I almost did a double-take. It is one seriously FAT chunk of handgun. Because of the condition and price and because I simply love S&W metal pistols, I had to own it but I literally went in to it quite unsure if I would enjoy shooting it.

Happy ending to the story...
I still think it is extremely pudgy. And if you swap it in & out of your hand with a 5906, it will give you an immediate appreciation for how well S&W (and Wayne Novak...?) set to work on ergonomics. The 5906 is absolutely the evolution of these and you can see and very much feel it.

But I found that I took to my 659 immediately and it is a joy to run on steel plates. I still think it would benefit from a strict diet & exercise, but I definitely love shooting it.

It does have adjustable sights, and now it has a new home my safe. Paid 350 for it, finish isn't great but the inside is clean. I just can't turn down a S&w auto anymore.

Great price, I cut my 9mm teeth on a brand new 459 back in 1985, that gun was unfortunately stolen but luckily was insured so when I got the check went out and bought a clean used nickel 59...still have that one !

Honestly was caught up in the high cap hype and traded a 586 plus like $100 to get the 459..... nowadays it would trade the other way !

If you find the double stacks a bit large in the palm an alternate take is to find a clean Model 39-2 or 439 to partner up with your 459, same upper narrower single stack lower.
