Anyone see or know anything of the infamous 4596. Those few that I have seen do not have this style of trigger guard. No one appears to know when where or how many. From what I've seen here it was a one day run. But with two different trigger guards in one day? Thanks

If it has the round guard then it sounds like it was made up later. The 4596 were made for Lew Horton in '90, 382 units, they were suppose to have square guards.

While I am in no way disputing your reply I do have a question: If it has been "recurved", why is the manufacturer stamp on the round guard on the front top of the guard, while the square guard (pictured below) have the same markings on the bottom of the front guard?

Manufacturers proof marks are rarely absolute. I have 3rd Gens with them and 3rd Gens without. And they are not always in the exact same place. Like I said in your other post and handgunner356 said here, it's been machined or filed to be rounded. Looks pretty good too.

I have a 1006 that has a trigger guard shaped the exact same way. I've never seen a 1006 with a squared off guard, which leads me to believe this may not have been re-ground.

I have a sqare-guard 5906 with the inverted "T" mark in the upper part of the trigger guard, like in Capt. Chumbuckets first photo. And the square-guard has a slight kidney shape opening to it, while a round trigger guard opening is more of an oval.

So it looks to me like someone ground off the hook on Capt. Chumbuckets 4596. It was very nicely done - obviously by someone who knew what they were doing - but it certainly did not come straight out of the S&W factory like that.

I want to thank you all for your inputs on the trigger guard. Does anyone know why such a low number was manufactured and/or for who?
