45Auto for personal protection

Thanks BUFF. I try to get to the range once a week. and go threw at least 50 rounds of 45 auto each month.

I would agree with several other posters, and recommend Gold Dot or Golden Sabre. (I'm currently carrying Winchester Ranger, department-supplied, but generally used Golden Sabre when I bought my own for off-duty carry.) I've never been a real fan of the Glaser.

As much as I'm not a big fan of the "water jug test", it's the most expensive testing material most of us will use (I don't like to spend other people's money that's why I'm not into politics. I use Perma-Gel BTW), and it can tell you things. Stack up four milk jugs full off water and stick four layers of denim in front of the first one (heavy clothing is important, you are in Michigan). Shoot. If the bullet doesn't expand, look elsewhere.

What do you guys think of the cheap Winchester USA brand 230 JHP sold at Wal-Mart?

In this day and age, you get what you can get! I've used plenty of their FMJ at the range, with no problems whatsoever. It's a "name brand," so it's well-made to their standards, although their cheaper stuff does seem to be a little bit dirtier. (No big deal- just a little more Hoppes and a few more patches!) I've had a few boxes of the JHP, and they seem to feed just as reliably as the FMJ, although you need to make sure the same is true with your pistol. I would have no qualms about carrying it. (If my department didn't provide me with Ranger +P SXT, or if I didn't have a box or two of Golden Sabre still ferretted away, I might have to carry it, too!)

AND AN EXTRA 20 MINUTES!! Thanks for mentioning that, I thought it was just ME!

I have quite a bit of it and reload the fired cases with 230 gr plated Berrys or Rainier swaged bllets.

I've never shot another human being, but as a newly minted Marine armorer (2111) in 1973-74 I used to listen to some of the salty Marine NCOs that had done tours in VN. The 230 gr FMJ seemed to do just fine in most cases, from what they said. Let me state that these were not "drinking stories" at the slop chute, these were serious conversations in the armory shop or at the range, or whatnot. These guys would generally not go into great detail other than to say that the "1911A1 worked for me when I needed it to," or words to that general effect.

I load 230gr FMJ in my Colt and Springfield 1911s when carrying one of them. It is THE most reliably functioning round that I've experienced, and I'll take reliability over expansion any day, keeping in mind the comments of those Marine NCOs.

I wonder if a glasser blue round would be the best choise for over all safety. I noticed that glasser blue only comes in 45 auto +P. Is the +P ok to use in my 457.

I wouldn't want to be shot with any type of .45ACP ammunition!

I used to use quite a bit of Glaser and have the following comments:
1. It's very expensive.
2. Point of Impact is nowhere near the sights.
3. Penetration is lousy, tactical penetration is nonexistant.

I had a Glaser round break up on the right top canine tooth of a large, charging dog. Broke the tooth, but that's not what I intended to happen. By the time that incident was over, I quit using the things. Since no one was bitten, the county refused to test for rabies.

If the ammunition will reliably penetrate to sufficient depth to cause fatal wounds on 150-200 lb animals, it will penetrate drywall. Practice your marksmanship!

Glasers are worthless. 110 gr 38 +P SPLs performed similarly on a dog for me as well. All the super light wizz bang stuff is not good.

+1 for 230 ball in the 45. GIs have carried it for over 100 years and I have not heard many complain about stopping power. In my experience, it does not overly penetrate either.
