Hi. New to forum. Looking for some info on the 460xvr. What kind of accuracy difference could you expect between the 5 and 8 inch barrels? would the 5 be effective hunting under 100 yards? Also thinking the 5 could ride on the hip but the 8 not so well. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Smith and Wesson 460

I have a 6 1/2 in Lew Horton PC. It will shoot a kill group at 100 yds( 3 in) I hunt in Ohio so a 100 yd shot is rare. This 460 is very deadly at 90 yards (my longest shot) I have over 10 one shot kills. The 460 is very very effective. The gun is too heavy with scope for me to carry on my hip, so I use a over the shoulder chest holster

I'm with jpro. I have an over the chest from S&W for mine. It clips to your belt for better stability to. I just got mine and put the Leupold scope on it with the 8 inch barrel and so far it seems very accurate at 100 yards. I see no reason it would lose that even at 200.

Both guns would have the same potential for accuracy......the difference would be you. Both guns would be a tough all day as you hunt hip carry. Both guns would be much more accurate when using some kind of rest when hunting, thus barrel length would be a moot point. If one was looking for a bear defense handgun, or back-up to a long gun there would be a clear choice. For a primary hunting handgun, personal preference would be the major factor.
