Does anyone know the fps differences in the 2 3/4 in barrell compared to the longer barrells like the 8 3/8 in on the 460 pistol? I want cold hard facts from a chrony...not speculation and rules of thumb

Simple Jarhead,

Buy 2 guns and a chrony!

Thank you, that is probably the best advice that I will probably get.

OK, now for some speculation.

Here is a page from a loading manual that has certain loads for a 38spl. I have used SOME of the loads from this section of the manual. THAT IS NOT WHAT I WANT THE FOCAL POINT OF THIS POST TO BE What I want to focus on is the velocity from the rounds on this page versus the same load from a shorter barrel.

These ones were tested in a 6" one:

These were tested in a 2" barrel, notice the differences:

Again, don't focus on the load information, I'm not commenting on any of that. Look at the difference between the same loads from barrel length to barrel length. Figure out if there is something you can use to extrapolate to satisfy your curiosity.

If not, do your part for the economy and follow my first suggestion!

Here is what I was looking for. I found this in the Speer #6 manual last night and thought about it after I started being a wise guy.

Hope this helps!

Marine, I have a 5" and an 8 3/8. If you want I will chrono each. Do you want to know about factory Hornady or my pet hand loads or both?
Will this even help you? I will tell you this right off...in MY two guns SOMETIMES the lower power loads go faster out the 5". But they don't shoot as well....SOMETIMES. Both guns want slightly different loads for the BEST accuracy.

The wife's loads that she keeps in her 5" are 250 grains at about 950 fps. These run 815 in my XVR...go figure.

Now, the real problem is the blast....after 800-900 fps with any powder you'd best not have to shoot it with out muffs.

At the power level/velocity of the 460 I personally think the velocity loss or gain is a non issue, but I'll be happy to generate you some hard numbers with my 5 an 8 if it will help you.

I chrono'ed the same load out of the two guns you describe. It was a 250 grain handload that went 2230 out of the 8 3/8" gun.

The same load gave 1495 FPS out of the 2 3/4" barrel .460.

A custom .460 with 5" barrel (not the 4" factory barrel with 1" compensator) gave 2010 FPS.

This is why I don't like barrels so short for their frame size that they don't make the gun any more portable/concealable, they just slash the velocity.

I second that.
