So, I purchased a used 5.7 a few weeks ago and it didn't take long to see that after several failure to return to battery and several lockbacks that something was amiss. It turns out, the previous owner must have stripped the whole firearm and forgotten to reinstall the takedown lever retention wire.
So, fast forward; I received the wire free of charge from S&W and installed it. Now, it has resolved the issue of the needless slide lock back but I am still having failure to return to full battery. It seems like every few rounds, the extractor is behind the case rim and this obviously prevents the breechface from locking into position.
I took the extractor off the last cleaning and found it odd that unlike a traditional extractor with a spring providing some give to move and engage the case rim, the 5.7 uses a "U" shape but it does not appear to have much give to it at all.
If anyone else has had this issue before or can otherwise recommend a solution, please let me know
