I have always preferred the 3.5" and 5" barrels to any other on the N-frame. If it wasn't so bloody expensive I'd have all the 4" guns cut back to 3.5" and all the 6" ones cut to 5". OK, that would be over the top but you get the idea. (smile)

I have 2 5" N frames. My first was a Model 27 blued I've had for about 35 or 40 years. I bought the 27 after shooting three Model 19's loose with full house loads. In my misspent youth I was into high velocity loads. The second is a 625-3 (headspaces on the case mouth). I had bought a Model 25 6" from the then Smith & Wesson Regional Manager, John Podergois. We shot in an informal combat pistol league at the long gone Gunnery in St. Louis Park, MN. I think John had the factory put this one together as it had a spare cylinder and yoke to convert it quickly to 45 Colt. My favorite load for the longer round was a 454424 265 grain Keith and 10 grains of Unique. The cylinder was short to fit in the short window for the 45 ACP and I had to crimp the case over the front band on the 454424 to chamber the round. I just did not like that. When a collector friend saw the 25 "convertible" he asked what I wanted for it and I said a new 625. Back then the 625 was quite new and it took him a while to come up with. I am a fan of the 45 ACP (and 45 Colt) but have grown older and stiffer and hate crawling around picking up brass from my 1991 A1 Gov't Model, so it gets long rests in the safe while I shoot my 625 and pop full moon clips of empties comfortably in to my hands! My 45 Colts are a Ruger New Blackhawk (three screw) and the now old style (heavy frame) Vaquero, both 4-5/8" (close enough to 5" for me). I have successfully hunted whitetails with both my Winchester 94 Trapper in 45 Colt and the New Model Blackhawk. My eyes are getting older as well so I am about acquire a Blackhawk with a 5.5" bbl. or a Bisley with a 7.5" barrel for deer. Be safe!

They do, don't they? And I see you did the same with yours as I did with mine...exchanged the Hogue grips for some real grips.
And have you noticed how hard it's getting to be to find a 25-7 for sale? They're great revolvers...they just feel right.

Oh boy I been collecting the 6" & 6 1/2" n frames. I never gave the 5" any thoughts. I really like the way my m58 handles with the 4" barrel in 41mag. I find the balance spot on. Can the n frames with 5" barrels still be purchased new?
My dealer had only two n frames left a 629 & 625 with shorter barrels. I went back and they were gone. I did grab the m24 / 6 1/2" in nickel. I should of used the plastic and bought them all.

Hey, no cheating! This is a 5½" barrel!
Here is the box for the 627-0 that I bought brand new in '89. You'll see the barrel length listed as 5½".

Just got a new 629-8, 5" Classic. It's beautiful and the feel is great. Ordered Ahrends Retro Combats in Maple for it off of EBay. Will shoot it next w/e, can't wait.
Planning on sending it to PC and then Jeff Flannery for engraving. It's a project acknowledging my grand dad who was a Sheriff of Dallas County in the early 1990s.
I do plan to shoot it.

My 5" 629-6 Classic is just a sweetheart to shoot full-house .44 Mag. loads. The extra barrel length & full-lug just sucks up a bunch of recoil.
