This thread brings back some fond memories.
In the late 70s, all my guns were stolen in a home burglary. At the time, Larry Kelley's exploits were pretty common in the gun rags. I used some of the insurance proceeds to buy a S&W M29 and sent it to Magna Port Arms to duplicate one of Larry's favorites. They cut the barrel to 5", tuned the action, hard chromed the entire gun and magnaported it.
A Threeperson's cross draw holster/belt rig from El Paso Saddlery rounded out the package.
That gun saw considerable use for 20 + yrs when, unfortunately, in a moment of weakness (stupidity) I traded it for some other "had to have" (a 629 Mtn Gun IIRC – which I still have).
Those pre endurance package guns tended to counter rotate with full house loads, so it was mostly fed 17.5gr of H2400 and 240/250gr cast bullets which, by the way, is still a great all-purpose load when full .44s aren't needed (or perceived to be).
Wish I still had that one – don't even have any pictures.
FWIW,
Paul
