(5) s@w help needed

I just inherited 5 s/W revolvers. I took all the number off where I could find them. I need help figuring what they are and what their worth. I did an inventory and photo's on (picasa) I can provide. Can you guys help. I am not gun savvy. CLCrider7

This is all the info I could find on the guns. Im only guessing the serial numbers are on the butt of the handle. That's all I could find. After all Im a 20 yr NAVY girl. lol

Wow! Nice guns. I'll take a pathetic stab at identification.

#1 Looks like a 3 1/2 inch Model 27 or pre-Model 27, possibly re-nickeled. It has a Tyler-T grip and stag grips, but the stags may be fakes. They do look pretty real in the close ups, though.

#2 - I'm really not up on these. Its a reblued Smith top-break, .38 S&W caliber. I've always called them "Lemon squeezers", I think the real name is something like "New Departure Safety Hammerless". Nice grips. The three notches on the butt are interesting.

#3 - Colt Police Positive Special, caliber .38 Special. Looks all original.

#4 - Colt DA in .41 Long Colt caliber. Also all original, I think.

#5 - Smith and Wesson Model 27-2, 3 1/2 inch barrel. Looks original. This one is much newer than the others. Well used, the name on the sideplate hurts the resale value, but if its somebody close to you its nice to have.

#6 - Harrington and Richardson .22 caliber. Low value gun, but dependable. Model 922.

#7 - Smith and Wesson Model 60, .38 Special. Someone didn't take very good care of it. Should clean up nice. Stainless steel.

#8 - Another oldie of them lemon squeezer family. Its probably a .32.

They look like a cop's guns. Is there a story behind them?

I did try to add an inventory of what I could find on the guns trying to make clear of it. Im not sure where the post went as I am new. I think it said it had to approved first?? Not sure. The owner of these was a 40 year under sheriff in Shawnee, OK. He collected for a long time. I still have 12 Rifles to ID. He also gave me a marble gun and knife. Too cool, before he passed. Thats all I know.

Top Break

The revolver that opens at the top, instead of a swing out yoke, is a "top break".
I have 9 of them and I can't get enough. I love those old revolvers.

On revolvers you measure from the front of the cylinder on the barrel end to the end of the barrel to get the barrel length as S&W never made a 2 1/2 inch Model 27 or pre 27. The shortest barrel length was 3.5 inch so it's either that or the barrel has been chopped and the sights reinstalled.

The 3.5 model 27 was a favorite of some law enforcement officers that bought their weapons and was their carry gun back in the day when revolvers were carried. Most police contracts where revolvers were issued were for the Model 28 highway patrolman which is the same as a model 27 but without the high luster blue and no checkered steel top strap.
