5 screw Model 27 C&R?

I'm interested in buying a 3 1/2" Model 27, but live in California. That means that to buy one from out of state, it must be 50 years old or older.

One that I'm looking at is a 5 screw model, with a serial number of S 80,xxx.

According to information that I've referenced on this site, S&W stopped making the 5-screw N frame in 1956 and this one should be ok.

Can anyone confirm this? Can anyone offer an opinion on what a fair price for this one would be, assuming that there are no undisclosed problems (the owner has described it as being in "very good" condition).

Your revolver probably shipped in 1950-52.

I would not be surprised at a $1000 price tag in Cali, maybe more. That's a nice looking old Smif.

Technically, that gun is a .357 Magnum "Pre-Model 27" as they didn't go to model numbers until 1957. The pre model started with serial # S75000 in 1950.

I'm in Ca and just picked up off the web a pre 27 with a five inch barrel made in 54, in excellent condition, in the low 1100's and was surprised I got it. I had seen several that sold in the 1300 to 1500 range. I hope you can get better pictures to judge the condition for yourself.

I have two Model 27's with 5 inch barrels, but they are the FBI commemorative revolvers, so I will not fire them.

I've always wondered why they didn't make the commemoratives in 3.5 inch, or at least offer a choice.

Not sure what they are worth...the value of commemorative and special edition guns is difficult to determine.

For us in CA, $900 would have been a good price, looked correct for that era. I paid $950 two years ago for a 1952 3.5" Pre 27, but it did have a red ramp sight, which could not be either confirmed or denied in the S&W letter as it was an option
