Today a 5 star thread popped up, Miss January, 1956. Posted by 29-1. There are no pictures. I'll bet there were at one time. Originally posted 01/31/2009.

Notable Thread, Early 5" Pre-29 with a Story. Posted by 29-1. There are no pictures. Originally posted 04/10/2009.

Notable Thread, Elmer Keith's Prototype .44 Magnum Ammunition and More!! Posted by 29-1. There are no pictures. Originally posted 01/03/2009.

Notable Thread, "Prototype" .44 Magnum. Posted by Doc44. There are no pictures. Originally posted 04/11/2009.

Is the problem that the threads are from 2009? I sure would like to see the pictures of these historic guns.

I believe that the photo site that hosted those photos (e.g. fototime...) went under, along with all the photos... Sad day...

Photo of the prototype 44 Magnum, S121836, shown below. This photo was originally hosted by Fototime whose servers burned up several years ago taking all of my photos with them.

S121836 is the first 44 Magnum built in S&W's toolroom as a photo and show promotion sample revolver. There were several other prototypes (S121839 used by C. G. Peterson of Remington for cartridge development...stolen from a collection in 1972 and never recovered; others may have been destroyed in testing).

Simply gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, as always!

The 44 Magnum, S121839, was given to a friend of C. G. Peterson. This person also had connections to the Ruger factory and had a great collection of unique Ruger revolvers. His home was burglarized in 1972 and many of his guns were stolen. Later, quite a few were recovered, but not S121839. I discussed this 44 Magnum with him as well as the burglary at the NRA annual meeting in Kansas City in 2001. He later sent me a list of the guns stolen and those recovered. S121839 is certainly of historical significance, but all we have is its record at S&W and the history provided to me over twenty years ago.

This is a great reason why members should use the photo posting tool offered on this site. Over time, ALL images posted through external hosting sites will disappear. If loaded using this Forum's posting tool, they will remain available as long as the S&W Forum is up and running.

Thanks for the great information, Bill. I never knew that there was a .44 magnum with such an early serial number. I realize that it is a promotion sample.

Prototype of NT-430. I was lucky enough to get a copy of Bill and Roy's book and it's right there on page 3. Thanks for posting the picture Bill.

I'm also lucky to own S130881. It's probably been in the Atlanta area the whole time, as it was shipped to the Beck & Gregg Hardware store in June of 1956.
