Hi my friends, these two revolvers are at my LGS and I think I will buy one of them to take to the range one or twice a year and to keep in the collection. They are about the same price. I could go with either of them and I like the look of both. Which one would you buy ?
The first is a model 66 4 inch barrel in very good condition and the second is a 686 talo 7 inch barrel in excellent condition
Thanks in advance

I personally like the very early model 66. Not sure of the price on this one, but they have increased in value lately, along with all the other no dash "first production" models. Serial numbers on the model 66 began at "K949100" in 1970.
Thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated, I think this 66 still has the pinned barrel ,which I have heard is a good thing ?. The serial is 4K960xx
Cheers

The 66 - pinned and recessed and a joy to shoot.
You get the best of both worlds. As mentioned above these have jumped in price over the last few years.

I would shoot 38 special or some light 357 handloads through it. The ones I have are all very accurate.

I would go with the 4" 66.
It would be the most useful of the two.

I've had one for over 25 years and will never sell it.
It is the most accurate handgun I have ever owned, and that's saying something. Shoots any .38 loads I can get in the chambers with surprising accuracy. Even bungled reloads with rolled over case mouths, loads with inconsistent crimps and seating depths, etc. never shot a lot of .357 loads in it because I don't like the fireball and muzzle blast.

Of course there is no guarantee the 66 you are looking at will shoot like mine does.

In the late 1970s and early '80s my pals and I had 6" Model 19s. A few of us worked part time in the gun department at H. Cook Sporting Good in Vegas. When the new S&W L-frames started coming in we turned up our noses. Full lug = too heavy.

Give me a K-frame .357 any day.

Thank you my friends, you have nudged me over the edge towards the 66, I will call and put a deposit on it now, cheers

That 66 has stainless sights. Only the very early guns were such equipped. Those are tough to find especially in high condition. While the original grips are not on the gun, 66 you posted does appear to be in very good shape. If it were me I'd buy the 66.

Well it's the quick and the dead, just sold an hour ago. At least I know to look out for another one and I won't settle for the talo, thanks again for all your help, cheers

Be careful with that Aussie Dealer. I've bought before from him. Some of his gradings are a little high than what the product looks like when u actually get it in your hand.

Ok thanks for the heads up ! He has this model 27 with a "light" ring in the barrel for $450au or $310 US . Was wondering if it could be re-barrelled for a reasonable cost ?
Cheers
