i have had my 500 for a few years now, bought it used. I've put
5-6 hundred rounds through it. i have changed the cylinder lock spring a couple times. now, i have a problem with the trigger
having an extremely slow reset like you can pull your finger out of the guard and watch it gradually reset has anyone come across this it doesn't do it all the time on average about once for every
5 rounds

If it worked for 5-6 hundred rounds and just started doing this, I would try a good detail cleaning before I started replacing parts. If the rebound spring has been clipped, as colt saa suggests, it would make it more sensitive to a build up of crud inside the gun.

My guess is old, gummed up oil. Pull the side plate off, and go might be able to wipe away any crud with a swab and then lightly lube it. If not, there are youtube videos that show you exactly how to take the trigger parts out..and put them back in. You can even pull the lock if you want to. While in there, maybe think about ordering new springs and replace them? They're cheap enough.

If taking the sideplate off , at least one part can fall out , seems risky use a spray cleaner/solvent (brake cleaner or carb. cleaner) and flush out the innards . Let drain . Let dry and re lube with spray lube . Rem-Oil is my choice .
If you want to remove the sideplate , lay the gun flat on bench , remove screws and plate , with gun lying flat...parts wont fall out...take photo's and look at how everything goes together, remove the part that can fall out and note how it goes back .

I would be nervous about spraying brake cleaner in there, as it will strip / disolve oil and not all may drip out. Lubing in there would make the issue come back eventually. Nothing in there actually requires any lube, just a very thin coating to keep rust at bay. It would be well worth the time to take the side plate off (with properly fitted screw drivers), clean everything and then apply a very thin protective coat of something such as ballistol.

Welcome to the Forum

This is not an uncommon problem

Your issue is the rebound slide/spring

Most likely a previous owner clipped off a few coils from the spring to get the trigger lighter

Or installed a too light of one from a Wolff kit?

I agree with colt_ssa and Steve. The problem is probably the rebound slide spring. It may even be boke, give S&W customer service a call, you can may be able to get a factory spring from them. With a firearm the size of the 500, I'd shy away from after-market parts.

I'd never consider changing springs in a gun meant for dangerous game animals.
