500 S&W recoil injuries?

So What is the best Grip and Stance for the 500 . Thankyou

I shoot it 2 hands, modified weaver. Do not lock your elbow. Keep a slight bend to it as the arm will act like a shock absorber and you won't jam your bones as I did that first day.
Keep a very firm grip on the revolver with both hands. I shoot it with a glove too, cause I'm a wimp. The glove is on my right hand only.

I shoot mine without a break. I got tired of my cheeks puffing out at every shot. It's fun to shoot now, more like a 44. The sound moves away.......

My compliments to owners and shooters of 500 S&W mags. I have only seen one of them before at a gunshop. The owner insisted that I hold it so I picked it up. After looking at this massive pistol with a 10 inch barrel I was intimidated but after picking it up I was totally surprised at how well this revolver was balanced. I am intrigued, however I hope I can find someone locally that has one that I can shoot before buying.

John Taffin article

I believe it was in an article by John Taffin, that he described
fractured wrist-bones, hair-line fractures, that occurred from too
much range time with heavy-recoil handguns. The article was in a
gun-mag, that I can't lay my hands on now. He said that he was
limiting his use of full-house loads. Anybody else see this article?

TACC1,

The John Taffin Article is actually a two-parter, the first article was in the American Handgunner Jan/Feb 1996 and the second was found in the American Handgunner Mar/Apr 1997.

I actually kept the articles because at the time I was shooting a FA 454 Casull loaded very heavy on a regular basis. There is a posibility that my wrist problems started there, but no positive evidence.

Hope this helps.

Anyone had injuries from the recoil of the 500 S&W? Other than the YouTube gun to the head stuff...

I've heard 2 second hand stories and want to know if these are possible/probable. First one sounded plausible... firing with 330 grain ammo cause "lightening up the arm" feeling and cause some discomfort for the rest of the day. The second story was the very same gun and ammo being fired one handed which gave the shooter a "broken wrist".

Does this stuff really happen?

I guess it depends on the gun and the shooter.

I had a range session with a good buddy a couple of months ago. We did some serious shooting and then decided to goof off a bit.

This was shot on my cell phone by my buddy.

I'm the ogre shooting the two 500's. 440gr fullhouse loads.

These guns are well made and rock solid. Sweet triggers.

Like I said, we were just goofing around:

Speaking of doubling-up, check this out...

YouTube - FULL AUTO 500 S&W

It's a miracle no one lost their head! I guess the recoil must've caused her to shoot the second one double-action.

One of the reasons I don't like public ranges...

It's in this issue.

I was disappointed that he didn't really wring this gun out and put it through it's proper paces.

Oh well....guess I'll have to cowboy up and do it myself.

I haven't read the article, but I do believe I'm living it :D

Motrin and the hot type of Aspercreme is the ticket!!!!

John Ross reported that a couple of people had 500's hit them on the head using very heavy loads. I use a two handed hold and wear Leather/Nylon mechanic gloves. I don't over grip the gun because I think it makes the recoil feel worse!

I shoot mine mostly in the late summer and fall getting ready for Hunting season, but lately I have been shooting it more often, I need to get some ammo loaded up, off to the Bench!

have had my 500 mag from the PC since 2006...love it to hunt with as well as range use....just be sure that you reload $$
