Couldnt pass on this one. Bought it from a fella who purchased this 547 new in Bamburg Germany while stationed there in the 80's.

This thing is pretty cherry guys, not many rounds down the pipe of this one. He hasnt touched this in years and all i did sofar was give it a little wipedown. I dont see any wear to speak of, but the blue job to me seems as though it could be better. Some odd machining marks here and there and i noticed the stampings next to the serial that i assume is Germany's inspection markings.

Im not much on 9mm but this is a really interesting piece. Way different extractor, frame mounted firing pin, plus another pin above that too apparently help hold the round. Semi bobbed hammer, super stout pinned barrell and no shroud.

Why am i babblin' here are some pics.

Super neat piece. I wonder how many of those are out there. Looks similar to a 13 only in 9. Very unique. A keeper for sure.

KLYDE,

Apparently there was only 3000 some square butt 4 inchers made....who knows how many left.

Dusty jacket, dont know if i will keep this. Its super cool but doesnt really wind my clock for a shooter.

Nice.
I had the same marks in this 29-3 I use to own. I always figured it was bought in Germany by a serviceman and brought back to the states. There's also the name of the Importer stamped in there. Looks like you have it on yours too. Something like Westco (it's been a few years)? Anyway, they were a big Importer into Germany back in the day I guess. Don't know if they're still around.

say, shoot the beast and see what it does for you.

If you don't already have 9mm, and this doesn't float your boat, you should find it very easy to sell.

There was someone here last week selling a 3" RB 547. I was taking too long and did not have the right trading material, and before we concluded all that, it was sold. Maybe 3 days. Maybe 4.

You're right, I should shoot the darn thing but probably wont.

I will likely post it here for sale or trade. This gun should belong to someone who is more of a collector than I am.

I know what you mean by missin out on the for sale forum......i lost my chance at a PC 627 snub i been "hankerin" for just today!

The German importer during the 1980s was Wischo; I don't think they are at present.

You'll have no trouble selling the 547 here...

The 547 is a great shooter, mine have been more accurate than any of my other K frames. If you decide to sell it, it will go quickly on this forum.

I have a three page letter from a friend who was a S&W employee detailing how and why of the 547. I should download and post it as it's a very interesting read. These revolvers were very expensive to produce and anyone who owns ones can see why just looking at it. I found mine in a pawn shop and the seller thought someone broke the hammer spur so I got it for a little over $200 years ago. These are truly exceptional revolvers.

Hammer spur?

Mine is a internal firing pin. Since I have only run across one in my entire life, I assumed they were all like that.

So there are some with firing pin on the hammer and some with the internal firing pin?

These had to be some of, if not THE first S&W revolvers with internal firing pin

Very Nice 547 ,
You definately wont have trouble selling or trading that one .

I recently aquired a 3" round butt version,
Interesting that both have a pinned front site,
Also the barrel profile appears to be identicle to the older 4" Model 14-2 with no grooves machined in the rib.

The original configuration was the 4" square butt version,

1979 , 1 Test gun made
1980 , 100 four inch guns , 40 of the 3" RB's made"Pilot run".
1981 , 11 made.
1982 , 0 made.
1983 , 6486 of the 3" round butts were made "First full production run", ,
1984 , 3460 the majority were the 4" version.
1985 , 178 made.
1986, 3 made .

Total production of K frame 9mms from 1979 to 1986 is 10270 .
Production ceased in 1986 due to "Lack of interest and slow sales"

IMO S&W missed the boat by not offering a 4" target site version .... That would be cool.

Spur. Not the firing pin.
The spur is the part that points backwards. The 547 has a short one.

Has nothing to do if the firing pin is in the frame, or nose of the hammer.

I am concerned that he found his 200 years ago. ;)

Maybe so.
I want one of the 3" RB for CCW and a companion to my 9mm AR. As long as it hits close to point of aim, I prefer fixed sights.

My first police job was using the Model 10 heavy barrel .38 - kinda nostalgic for me, now.

:eek: That's just too cool. $200 for a 547. I thought someone else on this forum did well when he stole his for around $450. I got mine a few months ago. 3" RB. It's a shooter as the frame just below the cylinder was rubbed down to the metal in a small spot. I am not sure what was going on there. At 1st I thought it was the cylinder hitting it but there si no wear on the cylinder. The rest of the gun looks fine. I paid $650 for it. Great shooting gun.

I was told years ago that Smith had a contract with the French police. These were either overruns or the French defaulted. I had one of the 3' round butts when they first were available. To my everlasting regret, I sold it.
