First of all, welcome to the forum.
Secondly, I believe the model you are referring to is the 5946.
If so, then it is the DAO version of the 5906. If you have a more specific question, I'm sure we can be of more assistance.

Sorry. You're correct it is 5946.. I was just wondering if it was a quality pistol or bottom line production or what. This is my first hand gun and my knowledge on them is minimal so of you could tell me anything about it i would grateful. Thanks

Nothing bottom line product about it - a top quality pistol all the way. One of my favorites.

The 5946 is an all stainless steel, double action only third gen. S&W auto. Kind of on the heavy side but usually dead-nuts reliable with a nice trigger similar to a double action revolver.

If you have any specific questions about it feel free to ask, and congratulations on your new pistol - I don't think you will be disappointed.

That's a 3rd generation...

That's a 3rd generation pistol and a LOT of people would like to have it, including me. They are getting more scarce to find. Nothing cheap about that.

I have a 5943 aluminum frame, ss slide

Thanks guys! I was just wanting to get a grasp of what kind of gun i had. Thanks again. It sounds like i lucked up and received a great gun

They're also used by NYPD and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. If you're gun is one of them then you probably don't have the magazine safety. If it's not one of them then you probably have it. The gun won't fire unless you have the magazine inserted. Forgive me if you knew this already not trying to be insulting.

I've had said model for about three years now, its had a lot of hard firing and continues to impress the hell outta me!
It will hang with any Glock or SIG in reliability, accuracy is as good or better than a Glock, the trigger on mine is similar to that of a K frame Smith revolver, and it one tough pistol.
A quote I like to use comes from a now retired NYPD sergeant:"Whens yous rum outta boolits, just pop the mag and it makes a handy club!"
Clean it, lube it, and take care of it, it will take care of you.
