well am new to this site. I woke up about a month ago and thought I had to have a 44 smith mag with 8 3/8 innch barrel. the new designs just didn't do it for me - so the quest began. several dollars later - I have one in presentation box, what appers to be original bullet from factory in paper envelope]]serial number n894429 and I can't find anything on it yet -- any thoughts out there ?????????????? I can't wait to shoot it and hope it is better than the 686 that i have from long about 1972/1973 time frame !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you in advance

What information are you seeking? According to the Standard Catalog of ?Smith and Wesson 4th Edition, the N800000 serial range was shipped 1980-1983. Just my guess, but 894XXX was probably late 1983. Best way to get more details is to request a factory letter.

serial number

thank you - i was just wanting to know when it would have been made - so just send info to the factory or main page and they can tell me when it was made ? most records from that long ago do not exist any more or they are stored in some mountain out west!!

So there's a problem with the 686?

Somebody is sure to be along shortly and provide the link for a Historical Foundation letter. Cost is $75. It will describe your gun, the model's history, and where/when it shipped.

N875528 was shipped on October 29, 1981, so your 44 Magnum shipped a little later. I assume it is a Model 29-2 and has a barrel pin and counterbored charge holes in the cylinder (i. e. pinned and recessed).

Model 686 wasn't even made until 1980-81. I was at an introductory demo for the gun.

I hope you like that long .44. I bought them with six and 6.5 inch barrels, and they were far handier and plenty potent. Also, extremely accurate.
