This case came with a 29-2 6.5 in Nickel but I was informed that it could be from an old 57.
Thinking about it, did they ever make a 57 in 6.5?
I don’t think they did did they?
This is definitely for a 6.5 so that would rule it out.
It is a very nice velvet though. I have not seen it on any of my other cases.
Polystyrene?? Seems to be.
It’s nice, but I don’t know if it’s original.
Any info Would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The case insert is not original - you can view the 2 main types online - one would be with the tools inserts separately (the earlier ones), and the other with the separate compartment for the tools (those always had the felt falling off, so they needed to be re-lined). The insert on the picture does not look like anything that I have seen as 'factory'.

There was a certain rare type that came with the 57 with this kind of velvet.
I have the other types, but one of the guys here to see more pictures of this one because he said it could be one of the cases that came with the 57.

The velour lined presentation case was used during the first year of the Model 57 (64-65) and eventually phased out in favor of the clamshell case in 1965. The case you have appears to be one of the early ones modified to fit a 44 Magnum with a 6 1/2-inch barrel.

+1. Although the presentation cases were available as an option for most N-frames (Model 27, Model 29, Model 57, and Model 25?) in 4 different barrel lengths, the velour is early and rare. S&W did not manufacture a Model 57 with a 6-1/2" bbl, so the case is either correct for your nickel 29-2 or as Doc44 says, it was modified.

Ah. Interesting. Jeff noticed the velour Ins said it could be an old 57 case. When the penny dropped and I realized that mine was 6.5, And having never seen a 57 in 6.5 I figured it might not be authentic, but if it was modified, it will make a bit of a difference.
It feels like some kind of slightly tougher polystyrene under the material.

I had a presentation case, velvet lined, just like that for my first year Model 57. The case was stolen but I still have the model 57. I don't remember but the case lining may have used the Styrofoam insert for the 6.5", we all know how Smith and Wesson liked to use what they had on hand.

I have a Type 6 case (~2006) with the velour lining. It's for a 6" with ramp front sight. My personal opinion is these cases are far superior to the earlier mahogany cases as the hardware (dual latches) are attached with screws instead of tacks that were used on some of the boxes. That's just my opinion of course but they are nice cases. The Type 6 box has felt "feet" which is a nice touch. They have a place for the tools as well but it's difficult to see in the picture without the tools. Bill & Roy's book "The Smith & Wesson 44 Magnum" has some good pictures of the Type 6 along with pretty much all the wood cases made by/for S&W.

Well, I just realized I have the 4” case, too.
This one came with a polished Highway Patrolman with non original parts.

Mod 57 Velour case

This is a Velour case for the early mod 57s and the uncovered bottom liner which is not Styrofoam. The top is foam rubber covered with the Velour.

The OP's liners are the second type, preformed Styrofoam bottom with a foam rubber top, of the 4 different types used from 1960-1983. During this time period S&W produced standard cases for the following barrel lengths 3 1/2",4",5",6",6 1/2", 8 3/8", & 10 5/8".

I got this setup this past year off a Forum member. The gun’s beautiful to me. It’s a M57, 6”, born in 1973 with Serial #N1453**. I found a source selling glue backed velvet. I’m cool with wrapping the top soft foam rectangle but I may need my wife’s or daughter’s help getting the material in that pistol shape in the plastic bottom. And the little tool box. I got two outta five pics. My home net is acting up, pics won’t load.

The summer of '65 I purchased a new Model 57. Though mine was a 4", it came in a case with the velour lining, as shown in elect's photo. Years later, I relined the case for my 1976 production 27-2 with similar material.

Looks terrific.
I have a 629 case that needs re flocking.
I have the kit and just need to get around to it.
There are several videos out there on YouTube that make it look fairly simple.
