I showed a fellow the Winchester 54 30-30 a couple of weeks ago. He just called and wants to trade a 581 in 4 inch for the Winchester. Can anyone give me an estimate of the prices for the 581s.. I saw the gun a few months back and it is clean with a bit better than 90% finish. Pachmayrs for the stocks. I am not a buyer of fixed sight guns for the most part so don't really know values. He has a 3 inch 686-4 I really wanted to get but not very likely. He wanted about 600 for the 581 if I remember correctly when he showed it to me. Is the 581 fixed sight worth that kind of money?? Am trying to convince myself I need a fixed sight 357. It is a bit large for a carry piece...in my opinion. Maybe a good truck gun though. I know picas would help but this was an off the wall phone call so will kinda need some direction on this trade

If the 581 is in really good shape, his $600 price is not out of line. I don't run across very many 581s or 681s, and I am always watching for fixed sight revolvers. I like them. They usually shoot where I am looking and there is no rear sight blade to tear up the lining of your coat, jacket or forearm.

Well as I remember the gun it is in about 90% condition. Good and tight. Doubt it was shot much but was evident it had been holstered. Little blue wear at the bbl end edges of cylinders little on the front of the frame. Only L frame I ever had was a 6 inch 586 and while it was a great shooter just too long and a bit heavier than a 19 or 66. I did put a good trigger job on it and at the time was the most accurate 38/357 I had...

... my 581 4 inch .357 magnum.
A short bbl would be sweet.

That is the gun he wants to trade/sell ...whatever...except goodyear grips. But I do have a nice set of magnas. He's off and gone to Pa in the morning. I think for a few days..we'll see when he gets back.

I have no idea of current prices. I got a police trade in 581 several years ago for less than $400. It was quite apparently a right handed officer's gun due to the wear on the magna grips that came with the gun. All, that said, and not knowing current prices I would not trade it for a 30-30 of any kind.

Nice piece. I would pay 6 for it, bob the hammer, add a T grip, and carry it AIWB. That is my opinion based upon Homicide policing in S.Florida. But you probably didn't ask for my opinion.

A 581 has been on my wish list for years. I've never run across one for sale in my neck of the woods. You just don't see them very often. I'd quickly give $600 for one in decent shape.

That is exactly what I am doing...asking for opinions. When I worked as a fire investigator I carried a M-27 3 1/2 inch gun. It made me lean to the left....not really but it felt that way. I would think the 581 would weigh pretty close to the 27...esp with the goodyears. No if I get this thing I will use it for a truck gun. I trust the judgment of the people here. Not many detractors of the 5/681s. . And truth be told...I am not a fan of the fantastic plastics. Heck I bought the Sig 365 and don't know why...cept it was there,f to f and not too bad on price

You mention bobbing the hammer. I am asking your opinion on who can bob the hammer so it looks exactly like that on the rare PC-13 4. I have several for which I would love that hammer. My 3" Lew Horton 681 could use that also. Thanks to anyone for info.

I had 2 SS guns done by my department armorer many years ago. Both work fine. I imagine any competent gun smith could do the job.
