I have a 586-3 6" that I plan to sell.

When I recently went to detail clean it, I noticed the cylinder was falling short of the stop when the hammer fell.

I measured the hand width....092"

I had a hand that measured .098"

The hand dropped in and while carry up improved, its still falls short.

Am I missing something here? do hands come wider that .098"?

I dont recall this gun having a carry up issue, in fact I shot a match with it and shot a 498 out of 500 with it. so accuracy is there, I just dont recall the carry up issue, but I am 47 :P

I would like to fix so I can sell.

If there are wider hands out there....I will just request one through WTB section.

thanks in advance

There are a couple of things that control this, the principle one begin the width of the hand, though obviously the exact position and width of the window and the condition of the ratchet teeth is an issue. Make sure to check the ratchet that it is not beat up.

I seem to remember it is possible to get hands that are 0.1 wide but it has been many years since I took the S&W factory revolver class. I could be wrong.

robert, the gun is not beat up.

in fact, overall condition is excellant.

the internals look like there has hardly been much shooting.

I did check the star/ratchet, nothing to note there.

As far as I know, the .098 hand is the widest Smith sells. Are you doing the carry up check with cases in the chambers? That will make a difference. Going from .092 to .098 does not sound right. If the cylinder is not carrying up by just a little bit, it should not take the wide hand to correct the problem. Has the hand window ever been filed?

You can lightly peen the offending ratchet to move some metal so that the hand has more contact with it too. Just go easy if you do that though.

Bill, the 586 was bought for comp use.

I shot one match with it and then found a 14-5 which I will use, so I no longer need the 586.

The 586 shot good, but when I went to detail clean it recently, discovered the carry up issue.

Working the ratchet is above my patience and experience.

I dont get it. it was good last year, now it falls short on all 6 cylinders.

I checked with empties in the cylinder too, same results. To my knowledge the window has never been filed and judging from the internals, I dont think it has been tampered with.

I may have to dig out the Kuhn manual.
