Found a 586-4, 3 inch barrel. Does anybody
know the value of these? Supposedly they only
made 500. Collector wants $4,500. I haven’t
seen one for sale before.

I do have a 2.5" 586-4. Now I'm thinking I "need" a 3" too!

Dunno about those prices tho.

The seller clearly does not want to sell his gun unless, of course, he finds a buyer with more money than brains...

That gun is so overpriced that anyone who would pay that much money should have his head examined.

It seems super crazy expensive to me. I mean even if they only made a few of them it still sounds crazy expensive. Old and rare do not drive valve up. Not that some old and rare guns aren’t worth tons of cash. I’d look for a different gun at that price. You can find a 686 3 inch for under 800

Thanks for the reply’s. I totally agree the price is very high is a understatement, that’s why I posted the question as maybe I was missing something.

I am picking this one up this weekend. 586-4 3inch that has been magnaported, and has night sights. Probably from John Jovino

I posted picture with the gun up right but can't get it to rotate! I am also on the hook for a 686-1 3inch with a square butt? Anybody know anything about these two guns?

Fishjager: The barrel on that 686 is from a later model 686, my guess would be a 686-5 & up (686-6), as those are the dash models that came with the barrel markings reversed. Someone had that 686-1 with either a 4" or 6" barrel and obtained a late model 3" 686 barrel and screwed 'er in! I wouldn't pay more than $600 for it. Buyer beware!

The thumbnails are in the wrong direction, but hover over them and they show correctly.

The 3" 586 looks correct. They were made with a specific letter prefix and number order so it is easy to verify if one is original.

The 686-1 has a later (current style) barrel, with the caliber on the left and (presumably) Smith & Wesson on the right side. As far as I have seen all 3" L frames are round butt.

I am definately picking up the 586, but am going to let the 686 go to the wind. The 586 needs a little clean up,but that is no problem. I will post better pictures when I get it in my hands. I'm getting too old for this.

Fishjager
+1 on Jovino
-1 on those stocks, if one can call them that
-1 on the Magnaport
-1 on the sights
+ 2 on the 3" barrel

I don't do math, but very interesting piece.

OK, I looked up that 586-4 3" and it seems to me it would be product code 103495, which described in the S&W book is a 3" B (blued) RR (red ramp) RSR special for 1996. Book doesn't say how many were made, but it ain't many. I would love to find one.

Well, I bought the gun and got home and called S&W. It left the factory October 24, 1995 as a RSR Special. 3 Inch. So I got lucky.

I also ordered a front sight with red ramp, and rear sight with white out line. Now I need to find some nicer grips.

Had a 3" 586-? came with Spegel Boot grips..... nice gun ..... but when it was time to grab a gun to carry is always lost out to a 3" 66-3 or 3" 65.

traded it off for a used "new in box" PC Shorty-9.... even up IIRC...... wish I'd kept it for the "collectors" value if it really is a $4500 gun... :) ...... No way!

The original post was from 2 1/2 years ago and $2500 seemed an average price at that time. $4500 in 4/2018 must have been 1-3 determined (and rich) bidders in a war.

Don't know how much one would sell for currently. Probably somewhere between the two figures above?
