Hi, new to the forum and somewhat new to revolvers. I'm a do it yourself kinda guy and recently took apart my 586 L comp to fine tune the trigger. While disassembling it I pulled the hand off of the trigger. Then I realized there was a spring keeping it in place. Now I have no idea how that spring is supposed to orientate inside of the trigger to keep pressure on the hand. Can anyone help?

I suggest you do a search for S&W MIM hand spring and look at the photos. The first time this is done without a good reference you will pull your hair out until you figure it out.

Thanks for the direction. Actually shortly after posting this I figured it out. I definitely was pulling hairs last night. I didn't see that there was a seat for the spring inside of the trigger. Makes a world of difference once I connected those dots!!

This thread reminds me of myself when I was in my early 20's. My first business of order when I bought a new to me gun was to disassemble it down as far as I could. And yes, I did get into many hair pulling situations. As I have gotten older, my curiosity has diminished somewhat, and so has my hair!

I've taken a bag of parts in a couple times. :) Now I just pay to have it done right.
And no I don't have much hair anymore

Lol! I enjoy doing the work, and as I tell my wife the more money I save by doing the work myself the more money I have to spend on guns!

In my defense, I have a bum right hand/arm. So small parts manipulation is not my long suit. I have taken ar's down to pins and springs and managed to put them back together. But that's really not the same thing.
A man's got to know his limitations. :D

I think we've all been there at one time or another.

I believe It was said best by Creedence Clearwater Revival in their song "Proud Mary"......the people on the forum are happy to give....
Isn't that the way John Fogerty wrote it?

I had to take a Ruger Mk1 in the the gunsmith the first time I tore it down. And I also got my bushing stuck on a 1911 the first time I tore it down too and had to take that one in.

BUT, I've had my Mossberg 500 apart without any manuals or youtube vids. Just did and put it back together and it works. I also pulled apart my Colt Detective Special all the way and put it back together. There was one part that gave me an issue but the rest was pretty easy. I can't remember what it was. It was lower in the frame... It might have been the bolt but now I don't remember what was hard about that.....

And I've done several other rifles pretty far, like AR's, Garands, M-1 Carbine, etc. Those I had manuals or tutorials and it does make it easier. LOL. I think some of the stuff I would've not figured out without the manuals...

Anyways.... You win some you lose some. LOL.

Congrats on the new gun. But we need pics. :)

I used to be pretty intimidated by doing any kind of work on a gun. So I started with a glock. I said hey at worst I completely screw up a gun and lose a few hundred, but learn a lot. So now I just tear into them and start doing some work.

Here's my 586

This is with an iwb holster that I made. (I make my own holsters too! Leather, kydex, and hybrid)

It's current state as I do some polishing and change springs

I added mepro night sights and Altima grips.

To help avoid some errors and for an excellent resource guide, I recommend you pick up a copy of Jerry Kuhnhausen. There are also some good videos posted on Youtube by Larry Potterfield (Midway) and Jerry Miculek (S&W Rep and Shooter).

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to look in to that. I did see midway's video and Jerry's video along with a slew of others.

She's all back together and functioning smoothly. Double action is pulling an average of 61/2-7lbs and single action is pulling a very crisp 11/2-2lbs. My measurements before I did the spring change and polish were 101/2-113/4 and about 4lbs single action.

So I have the type 2 reduced hammer spring and a 12lb trigger return spring installed. Plus I polished many of the internals. I tried the 11lb return spring but I found it would hang up every once in awhile if I did a rapid fire. My finger could not beat the 12 lb spring

Nice work on that gun. I especially like the sights. My Lcomp sights are ****. I just used a 14# rebound slide spring and everything else stock. Smooth as butter and never a soft hit.

That link would've saved me a good 2+hrs of frustration lol. But eventually I saw that cutout and put it together.

I tried to keep the stock sights and just paint the ramp red with that worthless night dot. Hated it so I picked up the mepro 3 dot. Pretty easy to install.

I will say that the action on my gun was very smooth to begin with (smoothest that I've handled that was stock) a credit for sure to the fact that it's a performance center, but there's always room for improvement!

That is pretty light. But I think the comp guys look to get it down around that..... That's crazy light for a normal DA revolver though. I think.

That 6 1/2 - 7lbs. D/A might give you a problem. I've found that much less than 8lbs. can give you some light hits.

I'm wondering about that too. Range day will most likely be Monday. So, I'll have a variety of ammo and just make sure everything is working.

I did a similar job on a ruger gp100 and it has ran flawless with a 6-7lb pull.
